Troubleshooting
Recording issues:
Check your system microphone permissions
Try selecting a different audio device in settings
On Windows, ensure your microphone is set as the default recording device
On macOS, ensure you've granted microphone permissions to VS Code
If you see "missing filename" errors on Windows, update to the latest version which includes fixes for SoX command structure
SoX process not terminating:
If SoX processes continue running after stopping recording, update to the latest version which includes improved process termination
As a manual workaround, you can terminate SoX processes using Task Manager on Windows or pkill -9 sox on macOS/Linux
Transcription errors:
Ensure you have a valid API key
Check your internet connection
Try using a different transcription service
Real-time transcription issues:
Ensure you're using a compatible model (currently only supported with AssemblyAI "best" model)
Real-time is NOT supported with AssemblyAI "nano" model or Whisper model
Check your internet connection speed and stability
If experiencing delayed responses, try with shorter recordings or smaller audio chunks
If connection fails, the extension will automatically fall back to regular transcription
For WebSocket connection errors, check firewall settings that might be blocking WebSocket traffic
UI not updating:
Restart VS Code
Check for extension updates
Pause/Resume not working:
Ensure you're using the correct keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+Shift+0 by default)
Check if the recording is actually in progress before attempting to pause
Try stopping and starting a new recording if pause/resume is unresponsive
Can't access original prompt:
Make sure you've completed a recording with optimization enabled
Use the command palette to search for "VoiceHype: View Original Transcript"
Check the history panel for previous recordings
Platform-Specific Issues
Windows
If you encounter issues with audio recording, try selecting a specific audio device in the settings
Make sure your microphone is not being used by another application
For SoX-related issues, the extension now includes the full SoX 14.4.2 package for Windows
macOS
If you're prompted for microphone permissions, make sure to allow access
If recording doesn't work, try restarting VS Code after granting permissions
Linux
On some Linux distributions, you may need to install PulseAudio or ALSA
If using PulseAudio, set the audio device to 'pulse' in the settings
If using ALSA, set the audio device to 'alsa' in the settings
