Document Viewer for Visual Studio Code

The Document Viewer extension enables developers to seamlessly view Word, Excel, Pdf, Markdown, CSV, and TSV files directly within VS Code. No more switching between applications - keep your workflow uninterrupted by viewing documents in the same environment where you code.

How to Use

Open, Edit, and Save Files

1. Open a File:

   • Go to File > Open File or drag an Word (.docx, .rtf, .dotx, .docm, .dot, .doc), Excel (.xlsx, .xls, .xlsm, .xltx, .xltm, .xlsb, .xlt), PDF (.pdf), Markdown (.md), CSV (.csv), or TSV (.tsv) file into the editor.

     

2. Edit and Save:

   • Make your changes and save them using File > Save or press Ctrl + S (Windows) / Cmd + S (Mac).

   Note: Document Viewer allows basic editing of Word, Markdown, Excel, CSV, and TSV files directly within VS Code.

3. Sorting and Filtering in Spreadsheet

   • Use the filter icons in the column headers to sort and filter data. Right-click a cell or header for advanced options.

   Note: Document Viewer enables the filtering and sorting option only when the spreadsheet files are open.

Configuration Options

Read-Only Mode

• Prevent accidental edits to your files.

  • Via Status Bar:

    • After opening the file, click Document Viewer in the status bar to toggle read-only mode on or off.

      • Spreadsheet

        

      • Word

        

      • Markdown

        

  • Via Settings:

    • Go to Settings > Extensions > Document Viewer to toggle read-only mode.

      

Sorting and Filtering in Spreadsheet

• Adjust settings to organize data effectively.

  • Via Status Bar:

    • After opening the file, click Document Viewer in the status bar to configure sorting and filtering on the first row of the worksheet for quicker access.

      

  • Via Settings:

    • Go to Settings > Extensions > Document Viewer to enable or disable these features.
