SourCa IDE — Official VS Code Extension

Solve placement coding interview problems locally in Visual Studio Code with fast local testing and authoritative server-side judging.

Features

  • One-Click Problem Setup: Open any SourCa problem via problem ID or directly from the website using the vscode://sourca.sourca-ide/open protocol.
  • Self-Contained Workspaces: Downloads problem description (problem.md), function starter templates, public sample test cases (tests.json), and local runner harnesses.
  • Local Sample Testing: Run sample test cases directly in your local environment without hitting the server:
    • Python: python runner.py
    • JavaScript: node runner.js
    • C++ 20: compiles and runs against sample inputs
    • Java 17: compiles and runs against sample inputs
  • Authoritative Server Submission:
    • Submits your source code directly to SourCa's online judge.
    • Evaluates against the full test suite including private hidden test cases.
    • Automatically records your attempts, increments your solved question count, updates practice accuracy, and syncs with your dashboard!
  • Strict Per-Account Isolation:
    • Authenticates via Personal Access Tokens (sc_ide_...).
    • No passwords, OAuth secrets, or Supabase service keys stored locally.
    • Tokens can be revoked at any time from your SourCa Profile Settings.

Getting Started

1. Zero Configuration for Students (Ready Out of the Box)

SourCa IDE defaults to the official production platform at https://sour-ca.vercel.app.

  • New students do NOT need to configure any URLs, edit settings.json, or run any local servers.
  • When opening problems directly from the website via "Open in VS Code", the extension automatically detects and connects to the active instance.
  • (Developers only): If you are actively developing the SourCa platform locally on http://localhost:3000, run SourCa: Configure Server URL from the Command Palette (Ctrl+Shift+P) to switch.

2. Generate an IDE Personal Access Token

  1. Open SourCa in your browser: https://sour-ca.vercel.app/settings
  2. Under External IDE & VS Code Integration, click Generate New Token.
  3. Give your token a label (e.g. My Laptop) and click Generate Token.
  4. Copy the generated token (sc_ide_...).

3. Connect Your Account in VS Code

  1. In VS Code, open the Command Palette (Ctrl+Shift+P / Cmd+Shift+P).
  2. Type SourCa: Connect Account and press Enter.
  3. Paste your Personal Access Token.
  4. The status bar will show SourCa [sour-ca.vercel.app]: Connected in green!

4. Open a Problem

  • From Website: Click "Solve in IDE" -> "Open in VS Code" in the problem workspace toolbar.
  • From VS Code: Press Ctrl+Shift+P, run SourCa: Open Problem by ID, and enter problem ID (e.g. q-exp-001, q-dsa-01).

5. Run Tests & Submit

  • Run Local Tests: Press Ctrl+Alt+T or click the Play button in the editor title bar.
  • Submit to SourCa: Press Ctrl+Alt+S or click the Cloud Upload button in the editor title bar.
  • AI Code Review: Press Ctrl+Shift+P, run SourCa: AI Code Review & Debug Hints for educational guidance.
