RokRage Word Viewer

Preview Microsoft Word .docx files directly in VS Code or VSCodium.

RokRage Word Viewer is a local, read-only document viewer. It does not upload your files or write changes to the source document.

Features

• Show page-like Word documents with their page size and margins.
• Respect portrait and landscape Word sections, including documents that mix both orientations.
• Preserve common paragraph formatting, text styles, headings, colors, highlights and alignment.
• Show numbered and bulleted lists.
• Show tables, table widths, cell shading and merged cells, fitting grid-based tables to the available page width when necessary.
• Show headers, footers, hyperlinks and embedded raster images. Internal bookmark links scroll to their targets.
• Open external HTTP and mail links through the operating system.
• Hide Word field instructions such as PAGEREF while showing their cached results.
• Search text in the document, tables, headers and footers.
• Zoom from 50% to 200%, or fit the page to the available width.
• Show explicit Word page breaks as separate paper pages.
• Use the viewer settings to control page breaks, text shading, page margins, and margin balancing.
• Keep the viewer settings after VSCodium restarts and extension updates.
• Reload the preview when the source file changes.
• Show document title and author metadata when the package contains them.
• Keep unsupported-content details in the help guide without taking space from the document.

Getting started

1. Install RokRage Word Viewer.
2. Open a .docx file from the Explorer.
3. If another editor opens the file, right-click it and select Open With....
4. Select RokRage Word Viewer.

Use the Search field to find text. Use the zoom controls or Fit to change the page scale. Select the cog button to open viewer settings. Select a hyperlink to open it with the operating system.

Viewer settings

Select Settings in the viewer toolbar to change the page presentation. The settings apply to all Word documents.

The extension stores these settings in the VSCodium user profile:

• page-break display.
• text background shading.
• the page-margin preset.
• left and right margin balancing.

Margin balancing is available only with Document defaults. The other margin presets already use equal side margins.

The settings remain in effect after a VSCodium restart or an extension update. A document reload does not reset them.

The settings change only the preview. They do not change the source document.

Privacy and read-only behavior

DOCX package parsing takes place locally in the extension. The viewer does not send document content to a server. The custom editor is read-only and never saves changes to the source .docx file.

The viewer can open external hyperlinks after you select them and follows internal bookmark links inside the preview. It does not load external images or other remote document parts.

Supported content

The preview supports the common WordprocessingML content used by ordinary Word documents:

• paragraphs and common paragraph styles, including paragraph borders.
• bold, italic, underline, strike-through, font, size, color, highlight and superscript or subscript text.
• numbered and bulleted lists.
• tables with fixed or automatic layout, cell shading and vertical merges.
• headers, footers and document metadata.
• hyperlinks and embedded PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP and BMP images.

Limitations

Footnotes appear below the content of the preview page containing their reference. The viewer uses sequential numbering in document order. Custom numbering, section numbering restarts, and exact Word footnote placement are not supported.

This extension is a viewer, not a replacement for Microsoft Word. Advanced Word layout can differ from the original document.

The viewer does not fully show comments, endnotes, charts, OLE objects, tracked deletions, or uncommon image formats.

The viewer shows stored field results. It does not calculate new field values. See the help guide for the current rendering boundaries.

Large DOCX packages and images have local safety limits. The original file does not change when a limit is reached.

Page-margin settings affect only the preview. The viewer hides run-level text shading by default. Intentional text highlighting remains visible.
