🚀 DORA Metrics Dashboard for Azure DevOps

Stop guessing. Start measuring. Ship better software.

The four DORA metrics — proven by Google research across 33,000+ engineering professionals — now live natively inside Azure DevOps. No exports. No third-party tools. No extra logins. Just clear, actionable insight, right where your team already works.

DORA Metrics Dashboard – Basic Dashboard

🎯 Why DORA Metrics?

The DORA State of DevOps Report identified four metrics that reliably separate elite engineering teams from the rest. These four numbers predict software delivery performance, organizational outcomes, and team wellbeing better than any other indicators known.

Elite teams deploy 208× more frequently than low performers and recover from incidents 2,604× faster. The gap is measurable — and now it's measurable inside your Azure DevOps organization.

💡 Built for Azure DevOps Services and Azure DevOps Server 2019+

📊 Seven Visualization Views, One Dashboard

DORA Metrics Dashboard isn't a single chart — it's a complete analytics suite. Switch between seven purpose-built views to answer the question in front of you, from "are we shipping faster?" to "which pipeline is the bottleneck?".

Dashboard tour — analytics views Dashboard tour — filters and diagnostics

1. 📊 Basic — Core DORA Metrics

Your four DORA metrics at a glance, each automatically classified into an Elite / High / Medium / Low performance band based on the 2023 State of DevOps benchmarks. Every card shows the current value, supporting record count, and a confidence percentage so you always know how much to trust the number.

Basic Dashboard – Core DORA metrics, trend charts, and recent deployments

  • 🚀 Deployment Frequency — how often you ship to production
  • ⏱️ Lead Time for Changes — from commit to production
  • 🔧 Mean Time to Restore — how fast you recover
  • 🛡️ Change Failure Rate — how often deploys cause incidents
  • Interactive 12-week trend chart with Elite/High/Medium/Low reference lines
  • Drill-down tables for recent deployments and incidents with full evidence

2. 📈 Executive Pulse — Portfolio Health (Pro)

A balanced leadership view of delivery speed, stability, recovery, and evidence quality. The one screen you show your VP when they ask "how is the engineering org doing?".

Executive Pulse – Portfolio health overview

3. 🌊 Delivery Flow — Throughput & Latency (Pro)

Understand how work flows from commit to production. Spot bottlenecks in your pipeline, see throughput trends, and find out where cycle time is being lost.

Delivery Flow – Throughput and latency analysis

4. 🛡️ Reliability Lab — Failure & Recovery (Pro)

A dedicated focus on stability. Analyze incident patterns, recovery speed over time, and which deployments are correlated with failures — so you can ship with confidence, not luck.

Reliability Lab – Failure and recovery analysis

5. 🏁 Team Benchmark — Pipeline Comparison (Pro)

Compare branches, pipelines, or teams side-by-side. Find your best-performing pipeline and learn from it — or surface the one that's dragging down your numbers.

Team Benchmark – Pipeline comparison

6. 🔬 Metric Explorer — Distributions & Evidence (Pro)

Go beyond averages. Inspect the full distribution of lead times, deployment durations, and recovery times. Every number is backed by traceable evidence — commits, PRs, approvals, and stage timing.

Metric Explorer – Distributions and evidence

7. 🚀 Release Story — Release Chronology (Pro)

A visual timeline of every release in the period. See deployments, incidents, and recoveries on a single chronological axis to understand the story your delivery data is telling.

Release Story – Release chronology timeline

🏅 Performance Bands at a Glance

Every metric is automatically classified against the DORA 2023 benchmarks:

Band Deployment Frequency Lead Time MTTR Change Failure Rate
🟢 Elite Multiple / day < 1 hour < 1 hour 0–15%
🔵 High Weekly < 1 week < 1 day 16–30%
🟡 Medium Monthly 1–6 months < 1 week 31–45%
🔴 Low < Monthly > 6 months > 1 week > 45%

Thresholds based on the DORA 2023 State of DevOps Report.

🔧 What You Get

⚡ Instant DORA Classification

Every metric is automatically classified into the four performance bands. Know exactly where your team stands against the global research baseline — no spreadsheets, no manual scoring.

📈 12-Week Trend Charts

Don't just see where you are — see where you're going. Interactive trend charts show week-by-week movement across all four metrics so you can spot regressions early and celebrate real improvement.

🔍 Drill-Down Detail

Click into any metric to see the individual deployments or incidents driving your numbers. Identify your slowest releases, longest-running incidents, and highest-risk deploys at a glance — each one traceable to its commit, PR, and approval evidence.

🛡️ Confidence You Can Trust

Where evidence is partial, the dashboard tells you — with a confidence percentage and a plain-language explanation. You'll never mistake a missing data point for a green score.

⚙️ Zero Configuration

Reads directly from your existing Azure DevOps data — pipelines, git commits, work items, and releases. No tagging schemas to set up, no data migration, no connectors to configure. Install and see your metrics within minutes.

🏠 Built Native for Azure DevOps

Unlike generic DevOps analytics tools that bolt on ADO as an afterthought, this extension lives inside your ADO project. Your data never leaves your organization.

🔐 Privacy First

  • ✅ All metrics are calculated in your browser, using the signed-in user's Azure DevOps permissions
  • ✅ No external analytics service is required for the shipped dashboard
  • ✅ Your code, pipelines, and work items never leave your Azure DevOps organization

🧩 Under the Hood — Full Capability Transparency

Enterprise teams don't just ask "does it work?" — they ask "can I verify it, audit it, and trust it in production?" Every view in DORA Metrics Dashboard includes a "Let's look under the hood" panel that opens a live, row-by-row dependency matrix for that view — no black-box scoring, ever.

Under the Hood capability matrix – per-feature readiness, required APIs, manifest scopes, permissions, configuration, and data

Why this matters:

  • Explainable readiness, not a guess. Each row names a specific feature (e.g. Deployment Frequency, Lead Time for Changes) and reports its Readiness status alongside a plain-language "why" — so a Ready badge means something concrete, and a blocked feature tells you exactly what's missing.
  • Complete dependency disclosure. Every requirement the extension actually depends on is listed explicitly: the Azure DevOps REST APIs called, the manifest scopes requested, the user permissions needed, any required configuration (like production-target detection), and the minimum data needed for a trustworthy result.
  • Self-service troubleshooting. If a metric looks off, this is the first place to look — administrators and engineers can resolve permission or configuration gaps themselves in seconds, without opening a support ticket or guessing what the extension "sees."
  • Available everywhere, on demand. The panel is collapsed by default to keep the dashboard clean, and expands inline underneath any view with a single click — so the depth is always there when you need it, and out of the way when you don't.

🔐 Diagnostics & Privacy Controls

Alongside per-view transparency, a dedicated Diagnostics & Privacy panel — reachable from a single gear icon in the header — gives you full control over what the extension reports and to whom.

Diagnostics & Privacy panel – capability matrix, consent toggles, and installation details

  • Consent you actually control. Crash reporting and usage analytics are independent, individually-toggleable settings — not a single bundled "accept all" switch. Every setting change is itself recorded as an auditable consent event.
  • Full transparency on what leaves your environment. The panel surfaces your anonymous installation ID and the exact extension version in plain view, and lets you download your own diagnostic report as a local JSON file before deciding whether to share anything at all.
  • Support without the back-and-forth. When something does need attention, Send diagnostics now submits a structured, evidence-backed report on demand — no screenshots, no manual log digging, no guessing what the support team needs.

This is the same governance discipline platform teams expect from mission-critical tooling: verifiable inputs, explicit consent, and a clear audit trail — built in from day one, not bolted on after a compliance review.

🔄 How It Works

DORA Metrics Dashboard combines Azure Pipelines, Classic Release, Git, environment, pull-request, approval, and Azure Boards evidence:

Source Used For
Azure Pipelines Deployment Frequency & Lead Time
Git Commits Precise lead time (first commit → production)
Work Items MTTR & Change Failure Rate (P1/P2 bugs)

Production deployments are auto-detected from builds targeting your main or master branch, or tagged production. Incidents are detected from Priority 1 and Priority 2 bugs — or any work item tagged dora-incident for custom workflows.

▶️ Getting Started

  1. Install the extension into your Azure DevOps organization
  2. Open any project → find DORA Metrics in the left navigation (under Pipelines)
  3. Select your date range — 7, 14, 30, 90, or 180 days
  4. Read your metrics — no setup required 🎉

💡 For best results: ensure your production pipelines target the main or master branch, and log incidents as Priority 1 or Priority 2 bugs in Azure Boards.

📋 Supported Pipeline Modes

The dashboard works with your existing setup — no migration required:

  • YAML Build pipelines
  • Classic Designer Build pipelines
  • Classic Release pipelines

Filter by one mode or compare them all side-by-side in Team Benchmark.
