BlazeMeter offers a Visual Studio Code (VSC) extension to simplify local test creation and validation, allowing you to work outside the BlazeMeter web interface. This extension integrates seamlessly with the Taurus command line tool and provides an intuitive interface for managing tests, BlazeMeter API configuration, and syncing test files between local and cloud environments.

What is Visual Studio Code?

Visual Studio Code is a free, lightweight, open-source code editor developed by Microsoft. It's widely used for building web, desktop, and mobile applications. It is different from the full-featured Microsoft Visual Studio IDE.

How to Install BlazeMeter's Extension for VSC

  1. Install the BlazeMeter Extension:

    • Download the BlazeMeter extension from the Visual Studio Code Marketplace.
  2. Install Taurus:

    • Ensure you have Taurus installed and verify the availability of the bzt command line tool.

How to Configure BlazeMeter's Extension for VSC

  1. Generate BlazeMeter API Keys:

    • Log in to your BlazeMeter account.
    • Navigate to BlazeMeter API Key Settings and generate an API key and secret.
    • Store the key and secret securely.
  2. Configure the Extension in VSC:

    • Open Visual Studio Code and navigate to the BlazeMeter settings.
    • Paste the API key and secret to authenticate the extension.
    • Select your BlazeMeter account, workspace, and project.
    • Once configured, the BlazeMeter Explorer icon will appear in the VSC sidebar.

How to Use BlazeMeter's Extension for VSC

  1. Create a New Test:

    • Open a local test file in VSC.
    • Run the command: BlazeMeter: Create new test.
    • Provide the test details when prompted and the extension will create the test on the BlazeMeter server.
  2. Associate a Test with a BlazeMeter Project:

    • Run the command: BlazeMeter: Set up BlazeMeter reporting.
    • Follow the prompts to specify report name, test name, and project.
  3. Run Tests Locally:

    • Ensure Taurus (bzt) is installed.
    • Open a test file and run the command: BlazeMeter: Launch test locally.
    • The test will execute in Taurus, and results will open in the BlazeMeter web interface.
  4. Sync Local Files with BlazeMeter:

    • After modifying a test locally, run the command: BlazeMeter: Sync local folder with test.
    • Choose the target location and confirm the sync process.
  5. Browse and Run Tests in BlazeMeter Explorer:

    • Use the BlazeMeter Explorer in VSC to filter and view performance and functional tests.
    • Run, edit, or open tests directly in BlazeMeter via the Explorer UI.
  6. Validate Tests:

    • Open a test file and click Validate BlazeMeter test from the bottom status bar in VSC.
    • Review any error messages in the VSC output console.

Open the Command Palette (Ctrl + Shift + P or Cmd + Shift + P on macOS) and search for "BlazeMeter" to access the following commands:

  • BlazeMeter: Sync local folder with test
  • BlazeMeter: Create a new test
  • BlazeMeter: Launch test locally
  • BlazeMeter: Open test link
  • BlazeMeter: Set up BlazeMeter reporting
  • BlazeMeter: Show Settings view
