Meetings Calendar
Your upcoming Google Calendar meetings in the VS Code activity bar, with one-click join for Google Meet, Zoom and Teams.
Setup
You need your calendar's secret iCal address. It's a private, read-only link to your calendar that this extension downloads every few minutes. No Google sign-in or permissions are needed.
1. Copy your secret iCal address
- Open Google Calendar in a browser (this can't be done from the mobile app).
- Click the gear icon (top right) → Settings.
- In the left sidebar, under Settings for my calendars, click your calendar (usually your own name or email).
- Click Integrate calendar in the left sidebar, or scroll down to that section.
- Find Secret address in iCal format and click the copy button next to it. It starts with
https://calendar.google.com/calendar/ical/ and ends with basic.ics.
Don't see "Secret address in iCal format"? On work or school accounts your Google Workspace admin may have turned it off. Ask them to enable "Allow users to share their calendars externally" (Admin console → Apps → Google Workspace → Calendar → Sharing settings). There's no way around this from the extension.
2. Add it to VS Code
- Click the Meetings icon in the activity bar.
- Click Set iCal URL and paste the address.
That's it: your meetings appear within a few seconds. You can also run Meetings: Set Google Calendar iCal URL from the Command Palette at any time.
3. Optional: hide declined meetings
Set calendar.email to the email address of the calendar. Meetings you've declined are then hidden, and ones you haven't replied to are flagged.
Use
- Meetings are grouped by day. Hover one for its details.
- Click the camera button on a meeting (or right-click → Join Meeting) to open Google Meet or Teams in the browser, or Zoom in the Zoom app.
- The status bar shows your current or next meeting. Click it to join.
- A notification with a Join button appears
calendar.reminderMinutes before each meeting (default 1 minute).
- Meetings: Join Current/Next Meeting joins straight from the Command Palette. Bind it to a key for one-press joining.
Privacy and security
- Treat the secret iCal address like a password: anyone with it can read your calendar. The extension stores it in VS Code's encrypted secret storage, not in your settings, so it isn't synced or committed to a repo.
- The extension only ever connects to the iCal address you give it. Nothing is sent anywhere else.
- If the address leaks, reset it in Google Calendar (next to the secret address, click Reset), then run Meetings: Set Google Calendar iCal URL with the new one.
- Meetings: Forget iCal URL removes it from VS Code.
Troubleshooting
- A change in Google Calendar hasn't appeared. Google can take anything from a few minutes to several hours to update the iCal feed. Clicking Refresh only re-downloads what Google is currently publishing.
- Times look wrong. Set
calendar.timeZone to your zone, e.g. Europe/London.
- Zoom opens in the browser. Make sure the Zoom app is installed, or set
calendar.openZoomInApp to false to always use the browser.
- "Calendar: …" error after setup. Check that you copied the secret address, not the public one. The public one only works if your calendar is public.
Other calendars
Any calendar that publishes an https:// or webcal:// iCal feed can be used, such as Outlook or iCloud. Only Google Calendar is tested; in particular, Outlook feeds may use time zone names that show times incorrectly.
