Architecture

OctoPower is a thin VSCode frontend that routes your requests to the OctoPower MCP backend:

VSCode Editor → OctoPower Extension → AWS Lambda → OctoPower MCP → 4,000+ Tools
(UI Layer) (Routing) (Scenario 2) (AI Engine) (Execution)
  • VSCode Extension: Lightweight UI, settings, and chat interface with Process Guard integration
  • AWS Lambda: Scenario 2 handler normalizes IDE messages and routes to OctoPower
  • OctoPower MCP: Intelligent model selection, complexity scoring, cascade execution with 44-model routing
  • 4,000+ Tools: Specialized capabilities powered by OpenRouter AI models with unified pricing

Installation

  1. Install from VSCode Marketplace

    • Open VSCode
    • Go to Extensions (Ctrl+Shift+X / Cmd+Shift+X)
    • Search for "OctoPower"
    • Click Install

Quick Start

  1. Open OctoPower Chat

    • Click the OctoPower icon in the activity bar
    • The chat panel opens on the right
  2. Write Your Request

    • Describe what you want: "Generate a React hook for form validation"
    • Optionally select code in the editor for context
    • Click Submit (or Ctrl+Enter)
  3. Review the Output

    • OctoPower generates code using 1,000+ specialized tools
    • Shows complexity level, model used, and execution time
    • Paste directly into your editor or refine with follow-up requests

Usage Examples

Generate Code

"Generate a TypeScript function that validates email addresses using regex"
→ OctoPower generates optimized code with tests and documentation

Refactor Existing Code

Select code in editor
→ "Refactor this for performance and readability"
→ OctoPower suggests improvements with before/after comparisons

Write Tests

Select a function
→ "Generate comprehensive unit tests with edge cases"
→ Full test suite with 100% coverage

Security Audit

"Analyze this code for security vulnerabilities"
→ OctoPower identifies risks and provides fixes

Settings

Open OctoPower Settings from the chat panel:

  • API Endpoint — Lambda Scenario 2 endpoint URL
  • Model — Auto (default) or manual selection
  • Complexity Threshold — Control task routing
  • Timeout — Request timeout in seconds
  • Theme — Light/Dark/System (follows VSCode theme)
  • History — Enable/disable chat history

Parity with Claude MCP

OctoPower provides feature parity with Claude MCP:

Performance

OctoPower uses intelligent model selection:

  • Simple tasks (< 40 complexity) → Fast, economical models (800-950ms)
  • Standard tasks (41-90 complexity) → Production-grade models (950-1500ms)
  • Complex tasks (91-100 complexity) → Best-in-class models (1800ms)

Average response time: 1-3 seconds

Troubleshooting

"Failed to connect to Lambda"

  • Check your API Endpoint in settings
  • Verify AWS credentials and network access
  • Ensure Scenario 2 Lambda is deployed

"Request timed out"

  • Increase timeout in settings (default: 30s)
  • Try a simpler request to verify connectivity
  • Check Lambda CloudWatch logs

"Complex task takes too long"

  • OctoPower uses more capable models for complex tasks
  • This is normal behavior — lower complexity threshold if needed
  • Consider breaking tasks into smaller requests

"Wrong model was used"

  • Click "Settings" in chat
  • Set Model to specific choice if needed
  • Default is "Auto" (recommended for optimal performance)

Requirements

  • VSCode 1.75.0 or later
  • Network connection to AWS Lambda
  • Valid API endpoint configuration
