Fabric Jupyter Statement Metadata Renderer

Renderer for Microsoft Fabric execution metadata in Jupyter notebooks. Displays application/vnd.jupyter.statement-meta+json as readable JSON in VS Code.

Getting started

  1. Install Fabric Jupyter Statement Metadata Renderer.
  2. Open a Jupyter notebook (.ipynb) in VS Code.
  3. Outputs with the following MIME type are displayed as formatted JSON:
    • application/vnd.jupyter.statement-meta+json

Existing saved outputs work without rerunning cells or connecting to Fabric. This renderer handles the output type that otherwise shows:

No renderer could be found for mimetype "application/vnd.jupyter.statement-meta+json"

Relationship to Jupyter Notebook Renderers

This extension extends Microsoft's Jupyter Notebook Renderers by adding the Fabric statement-metadata MIME type listed above. It can be installed alongside that extension and does not replace or modify it.

It does not add renderers for Plotly, Vega, images, or other MIME types.

This is an independent community extension, not an official Microsoft product and not affiliated with or endorsed by Microsoft.

Features

  • Supports exactly application/vnd.jupyter.statement-meta+json.
  • Preserves the original notebook data.
  • Uses text output, never interpreting metadata as HTML.
  • No extension-host code, external services, or runtime dependencies.
  • No network requests or telemetry in the renderer.

Requirements

VS Code 1.85 or newer and a notebook editor capable of opening your notebook. For .ipynb files, install Microsoft's Jupyter extension if needed.

Installation and use

For a shared VSIX file:

  1. Open Extensions in VS Code.
  2. Select ... > Install from VSIX... and choose the VSIX file.
  3. If necessary, run Developer: Reload Window from the Command Palette.

Limitations and privacy

This extension only displays metadata. It does not execute Python, connect to Fabric, provide Lakehouse access, or implement the Fabric execution interface. It is not a general renderer for every Fabric MIME type.

If the renderer is not selected automatically, use Change Presentation on the output, if available, and choose Jupyter Statement Metadata. Also check that the extension is enabled in the current VS Code profile.
