Neuron Spatial Map for Visual Studio Code

High-performance WebGPU celestial codebase map, AST visualizer, and spatial code navigation extension for Visual Studio Code.

Neuron Spatial Map visualizes your workspace as an interactive celestial universe. Your directories become luminous star clusters, your files become orbiting planets, and your functions and classes become moons connected by live gravitational forces and laser conduits.

Key Features

  • Split-Screen Beside Code: Opens seamlessly beside your active editor (vscode.ViewColumn.Beside), giving you a real-time architectural map while you write code.
  • Bi-Directional Code Navigation:
    • Single-click any file, class, or function node to highlight and inspect its metadata.
    • Double-click any node to jump directly to the exact file and line number in your adjacent editor (ViewColumn.One).
    • Active editor tracking highlights the corresponding node automatically as you switch files or move your cursor.
  • Celestial Hierarchy Topology:
    • Tier 0 (Yellow Suns): Directories and module clusters.
    • Tier 1 (Cyan Planets): Source code files (TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, JSX, TSX).
    • Tier 2 (Purple Moons): Functions, methods, and classes parsed directly from the AST.
  • Multi-Level Level of Detail (LOD):
    • Dynamic semantic zoom with 4 distinct visual thresholds:
      • LOD Level 1 (Macro): High-level folder universe.
      • LOD Level 2 (Mesoscopic): File-level constellations.
      • LOD Level 3 (Microscopic): Full function and class definitions.
      • LOD Level 4 (Sub-atomic): Complete identifier and line visibility.
  • Hardware-Accelerated WebGPU / PixiJS v8:
    • Silky 60 frames per second rendering capable of handling thousands of nodes and conduits.
    • Animated laser photon pulses traversing active import and call dependency paths.
    • Dynamic adaptive text and line scaling.
  • 24 Live Physics Laws:
    • Full Newtonian simulation powered by d3-force with repulsion, collision radiuses, link strengths, and resting cosmic drift.
    • Comprehensive Slide-Out Physics Settings Drawer allowing real-time tuning of every simulation variable.
  • 100% Standalone (Zero External Dependencies):
    • Built-in multi-language AST scanner powered by @babel/parser and native parsers.
    • No Python, backend server, or native compiler prerequisites required on the target machine.

Extension Commands

Command Identifier Description
Neuron: Open Spatial Map (Beside Code) neuron.openSpatialMap Opens or focuses the interactive spatial map canvas beside your active editor.
Neuron: Refresh Spatial Graph neuron.refreshSpatialMap Re-scans the workspace AST and updates the celestial topology.

You can also launch the Spatial Map by clicking the Neuron Spatial Map icon in the top-right editor tab action bar.

Physics Engine Configuration

The extension exposes comprehensive settings under neuron.spatial.* in your VS Code settings, as well as an in-canvas Physics Drawer:

  • neuron.spatial.lineScale: Default global line width multiplier (default: 2.5).
  • neuron.spatial.physicsSimulation: Toggle active force simulation on or off (default: true).
  • neuron.spatial.minimap: Radar minimap display in the canvas viewport (default: true).

Installation

From VSIX Package

  1. Download or locate neuron-spatial-map-1.2.0.vsix.
  2. In VS Code, open the Extensions panel (Ctrl+Shift+X or Cmd+Shift+X).
  3. Click the three dots menu (...) in the upper right corner of the Extensions panel.
  4. Select Install from VSIX....
  5. Choose neuron-spatial-map-1.2.0.vsix.

Alternatively, run the following command in your terminal:

code --install-extension neuron-spatial-map-1.2.0.vsix

Requirements

  • Visual Studio Code version 1.85.0 or higher.
  • Hardware graphics acceleration enabled in VS Code ("editor.gpuAcceleration": "on").

Architecture

Neuron Spatial Map is engineered with a strict separation of concerns:

  • Scanner Subsystem: Scans the workspace files, parses AST nodes using @babel/parser, resolves import/call references, and builds the hierarchical topology.
  • Panel Subsystem: Manages the WebviewPanel lifecycle, state synchronization, editor tracking, and bi-directional IPC.
  • Canvas Subsystem: PixiJS v8 WebGPU canvas executing force-directed cosmic simulation and handling interactive camera viewport navigation.
