Ne-Codex Stats
A small, independent VS Code extension for checking your Codex quota while you code. Built with a straightforward student-project feel: one status badge, simple progress bars, and no busy dashboard.
What you get
- A status bar badge like Codex 4% used.
- A rounded Refresh button beside the title for immediate checks, disabled while fetching.
- Primary and secondary quota windows, remaining percentages, and local reset times.
- Credit balances when Codex supplies them.
- Automatic refresh every two minutes and a manual refresh command.
- Colors that follow your VS Code theme.
- A small pixel cat with relaxed, alert, and sleepy moods based on the fullest quota window.
- A reset countdown that updates every minute, with one quiet cat message.
- Automatic reconnection after disconnects; saved readings are explicitly marked as not live.
Quota usage is different from purchased credit spending. This extension shows the data returned by Codex; it does not estimate credit percentages or invent missing limits. Each member sees their own signed-in account, not the whole team's usage.
Set up
- Install Node.js and the Codex CLI:
npm install -g @openai/codex.
- Run
codex login and sign in with your ChatGPT account.
- Install this extension's VSIX using Extensions → ... → Install from VSIX.
- Click Codex usage in the status bar.
If Codex isn't found, set Usage Buddy: Codex Path to your executable or npm @openai/codex/bin/codex.js, then reload VS Code. On Windows, .cmd, .bat, and .ps1 paths are unsupported; choose the JavaScript entry point or native executable.
Commands: Ne-Codex Stats: Show Usage, Refresh, and Open Official Dashboard.
Privacy and requirements
The extension starts a local codex app-server and requests account rate limits. Codex uses your existing CLI authentication to contact its service. The extension does not read project files or .env, collect telemetry, store credentials, or share usage with other members. Requires a trusted VS Code window and a recent Codex CLI supporting account/rateLimits/read. API-key-only accounts may not provide ChatGPT quota information.
This is an independent project, not an official OpenAI extension.
Development
Run npm install, npm test, then npm run package. Press F5 in this folder to run the extension in a VS Code development window.
