Old Skool AI

Stop copy-pasting files one by one into ChatGPT. Select your files, right-click, paste. Your AI gets your project tree and your code, already formatted as a clean prompt.

Works with ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Studio, DeepSeek and any other chat that accepts Markdown.

Old Skool AI demo

Why "Old Skool"?

AI agents and IDE plugins are great, until they read the wrong files, burn through your tokens, or lock you into a single model.

Old Skool AI takes the simple approach: you choose the context, it formats it perfectly, and you paste it into whichever AI you like. You don't need an API key or an account, and nothing leaves your machine except what you paste.

Features

What it does How
🌳 Copy Context (with Tree) Project structure + the contents of every selected file Right-click file(s) in Explorer
📄 Copy Files Only Just the file contents, for follow-up prompts in the same chat Right-click file(s) in Explorer
📝 Copy Modified Files Tree + every file you've changed since your last commit, ready for "review my changes" Cmd+Alt+M / Ctrl+Alt+M or the sidebar
📁 Copy Project Tree Only the folder structure, so the AI understands your architecture Sidebar or Command Palette

There's also a sidebar in the Activity Bar for one-click access, without needing to remember any shortcuts.

What gets copied

### Project Structure
```
.
├── src
│   ├── extension.ts
│   └── utils.ts
├── package.json
└── README.md
```

### File Contents

**File: `src/extension.ts`**
```
import * as vscode from 'vscode';
...
```

The output is clean Markdown, which every major LLM understands. File paths are relative to your project root, so the AI knows exactly where everything lives.

Prompt ideas

Paste the context, then ask:

  • "Here's my project. Explain how these files work together."
  • "Find the bug causing X in these files."
  • "Review my modified files before I commit." ← use Copy Modified Files
  • "Write unit tests for these files."
  • "Suggest a better folder structure for this project." ← use Copy Project Tree

Settings

Setting Description
old-skool-ai.ignoredFolders Folder names hidden from the project tree (e.g. node_modules, dist, .venv).

The tree shows up to 4 levels deep to keep prompts focused and token-friendly.
