US Tool

Split Jira user stories into traceable tasks, then push them to Jira or export them as context for AI coding agents.

US Tool reads a user story (from Jira, a text selection, or a file), splits it into tasks, and runs a scope guard: every task must trace back to a requirement, and every requirement must be covered by at least one task. Nothing is added outside the story's scope.

Features

  • Fetch from Jira: load a user story by issue key.
  • Parse selection / file: turn any Markdown or plain-text story into requirements.
  • Scope guard: detects orphan tasks and uncovered requirements.
  • Task tree view: review the story and its tasks in the US Tool sidebar.
  • Push to Jira: create the tasks as sub-tasks (duplicates matched by exact title are skipped).
  • Export AI context: Markdown, JSON or Excel, ready to hand to an AI agent.

Commands

Command Shortcut
US Tool: Fetch User Story from Jira Ctrl+Shift+U
US Tool: Parse Selected Text as User Story Ctrl+Shift+Alt+U
US Tool: Parse Current File as User Story Editor context menu
US Tool: Push Tasks to Jira Backlog
US Tool: Export AI Context
US Tool: Configure Jira Connection
US Tool: Open Panel

On macOS, use Cmd instead of Ctrl.

Getting started

  1. Run US Tool: Configure Jira Connection and enter your Jira URL (https://your-domain.atlassian.net), your Atlassian email, and an API token.
  2. Run US Tool: Fetch User Story from Jira, or open a file / select text and use Parse.
  3. Review the tasks in the US Tool sidebar.
  4. Push them to Jira or export the context.

No Jira? Parsing a file or selection and exporting work without any connection.

Security

The API token is stored in VS Code's SecretStorage, never in settings or on disk in clear text. Review the tasks before running Push Tasks to Jira, as it creates issues in your project.

Requirements

VS Code 1.85 or later.
