MergeSense - xev for VS Code
AI-assisted test design for Jira, PRs, Confluence, and BDD workflows inside VS Code.
This is the VS Code port of the MergeSense - xev IntelliJ plugin. The generation logic, prompts,
supported integrations and exports are the same; the UI is rebuilt with VS Code webviews.
What it does
- Generates manual test cases (positive / negative / edge) from a Jira issue, a PR URL, a Confluence
page and the local git history.
- Generates BDD/Cucumber scenarios that reuse the existing Jira Cucumber tests of a project as style
reference and step inventory (also cross-project).
- Exports to Excel (
.xls + .xlsx, timestamped) and .feature files.
- Shows readable, scrollable, copyable diagnostic popups when something goes wrong.
Usage
Open the MergeSense - xev icon in the Activity Bar (you can drag the view to the secondary side bar).
Generate tab
- Enter a Jira ID or Confluence URL, optionally a PR URL
- Click Fetch Info / Fetch PR (optional — generation fetches them too)
- Click Generate Test Cases
Context used: PR diff + comments → Jira issue → related Jira issues → Confluence → local git history.
The Excel file is written to the output directory and the results open in the Results tab.
Generate BDD tab
- Enter the Jira Project ID that contains reusable Cucumber test cases
- Optionally enter a base Jira issue or Confluence URL
- Click Fetch Info, then Generate BDD Cases
BDD discovery uses: project = "<PROJECT>" AND issuetype = Test AND "Test Type" = Cucumber
Results tab
Color-coded table (positive / negative / edge), scenario detail, Export to Excel,
Export to Feature and Copy All.

Tokens are stored in the OS keychain through VS Code SecretStorage; other values live in the user
settings under mergesense.*.
- If the Anthropic token is empty the extension uses
ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, or falls back to the
Claude CLI when ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN is set in the environment VS Code was launched from.
- For GitHub Copilot endpoints with an empty token, the local Copilot login files are tried first,
then the GitHub account signed in to VS Code.
