DevPlan

DevPlan is a lightweight, offline-first project and task manager for Visual Studio Code. Project data lives in workspace files under .devflow/, so it can be version-controlled and edited by people or coding agents without a server or account.

Current features

  • Initialize a workspace with a project configuration, task folders, and a generated AGENT_GUIDE.md.
  • Create, view, update status, and archive tasks.
  • Open a theme-aware Kanban board with drag-and-drop, persisted single-task ordering, keyboard-accessible move controls, search, sprint/assignee filters, and task editing.
  • Store each task as Markdown with YAML frontmatter or JSON (selected in .devflow/config.json).
  • Validate task files and report malformed files in the VS Code Problems panel without rewriting them.
  • Detect external file changes and refresh the task view.
  • Persist changes atomically, preserve unknown Markdown frontmatter fields, and detect overlapping edits.
  • Show pending and active task totals in the status bar.
  • Generate and switch to a task-specific Git branch from the task metadata.
  • Import and validate agent-generated plan files from JSON or Markdown and copy a reusable prompt template to the clipboard.
  • Open a focused task view and toggle a task timer without leaving the task list.

Getting started

  1. Open a workspace folder.
  2. Run DevPlan: Initialize Project from the Command Palette, or click DevPlan: Initialize in the status bar.
  3. Run DevPlan: Create Task or use the plus button in the DevPlan Tasks view.
  4. Run DevPlan: Open Kanban Board to search, filter, move, reorder, or edit tasks.
  5. Edit task files directly in .devflow/tasks/; the tree, board, and status bar refresh when files change.

The default project directory is .devflow/. Change devflow.dataDirectory to use another workspace-relative path. The project format and workflow settings live in that directory's config.json.

Task files

Markdown task files use YAML frontmatter with required id, title, and status fields. The filename must match the task ID. Optional fields include priority, assignee, due date, labels, sprint, milestone, dependencies, subtasks, and acceptance criteria. Unknown frontmatter keys and the Markdown body are retained when DevPlan updates a task.

The generated .devflow/AGENT_GUIDE.md describes the current project configuration and gives coding agents the file conventions and completion workflow.

Development

npm install
npm run test:unit
npm test
npm run package:vsix

npm run test:unit runs the storage and core tests without downloading VS Code. npm test runs the VS Code integration suite and may download the VS Code test runtime. npm run package:vsix creates a distributable Visual Studio Code extension bundle (.vsix). Press F5 in VS Code to launch the Extension Development Host.

Roadmap

The implementation covers the Phase 1 foundation, the Kanban portion of Phase 2, the dashboard and sprint/milestone work, plan import validation, and the start of Phase 5 Git task-branch, timer, and focus-task support described in the project brief. Remaining Phase 4/5 work includes richer Git history views, burndown/velocity charts, notifications, and final marketplace packaging.
