A quiet dark theme for Visual Studio Code. One neutral gray workbench, three ways to color your code.

Pick your variant

Theme	What it feels like
Anthracite	Dusty, low-saturation color. Lavender keywords, sage strings, amber numbers, blue functions, clay types. Calm enough for a full day and still easy to scan.
Anthracite Vivid	The same roles with more saturation. Pick this if you scan by color and want tokens to jump out.
Anthracite Mono	Almost no hue. Structure comes from brightness and warmth: bright keywords, warm strings, cool types, dim punctuation.

Whichever you pick, the chrome around the editor is the same near-black gray, and errors, warnings, git status, and diffs keep their colors so they still mean something.

Install

From the Marketplace:

Open the Extensions view (Cmd+Shift+X on macOS, Ctrl+Shift+X on Windows and Linux).
Search for Anthracite and click Install.
Open Preferences: Color Theme (Cmd+K Cmd+T or Ctrl+K Ctrl+T) and choose Anthracite, Anthracite Vivid, or Anthracite Mono.

From a downloaded .vsix file:

code --install-extension anthracite-theme-0.1.0.vsix

Good to know

Comments, parameters, and this or self are italic. A font with a true italic face looks best; otherwise the editor synthesizes a slant.
Semantic highlighting is on, so TypeScript, Python, and Rust look the same with or without a language server running.
Bracket pairs are colored from the same palette as your code. In Mono they step through grays.
The terminal uses matching colors, so git and test output read the same way as the editor.
