Value Snap

Value Snap is a Visual Studio Code extension that uses keyboard shortcuts to perform smart code selections.

Currently the extension offers a single feature, with additional ones planned for future releases.

📖 Usage

ALT + = Selects value after equals selects the value after the first assignment operator on each selected line.

  • Recognizes language-specific operators such as =, :=, <-, compound assignments, and : in JSON, YAML and CSS.
  • Trims leading and trailing spaces and tabs around the value.
  • Stops before inline comments, statement terminators and line endings.
  • Keeps commas and semicolons inside strings, function calls, arrays and objects.
  • Detects when the assignment value is a single string. If so, toggles between including or excluding quotes.

✨ Features

  • Detects the current file's language and uses the appropriate inline comment markers (e.g., //, #, --) and string markers.
  • Ignores operators and comment markers inside strings, and distinguishes assignment operators from comparisons and arrows.
  • Works with multiple line selections.
  • Works with multiple cursors.
  • Lightweight and fast — no configuration required.

⚠️ Limitations

Detection is line-based, rather than a complete language parser. It does not track comments or strings that started on earlier lines, or switch languages inside embedded sections. Syntax where the same operator represents both assignment and comparison (such as SQL =) can be ambiguous.
