Every variant is built on one shared syntax layer and one neutral workbench. What changes between them is the accent, which is to say buttons, focus, the active tab, the title bar and links, plus a complementary badge.

Switch from Preferences > Color Theme whenever you like. Your syntax colours do not move.

Built for the hours

Tuned contrast: readable without being loud, at any time of day.
Semantic highlighting: variables, properties and parameters told apart by what they are, not only by their shape.
Eleven token categories: comments, strings, functions, keywords and the rest, each with a job.
Bracket pairs: four colours in rotation, so nesting reads itself.
Git colours: additions and deletions you can tell apart at a glance.

The whole workbench, not just the editor

Activity bar, sidebar, terminal, title bar, menus, status bar and notifications all belong to the same palette.

Text on the accent is chosen per theme, light or dark according to how bright that accent is, so buttons, menus and selections stay legible in every one of the nine.

Getting started

Open Extensions (Ctrl + Shift + X), search for Dark Mode Lover, install.

Then Preferences > Color Theme, and pick the one you want.

Requires VS Code 1.70 or later. Windows, macOS and Linux.

A few things worth knowing

The nine share one syntax layer. That is the whole idea, and it is also the limit: there is no per-variant tweak to how code is coloured.
Every variant is dark. There is no light one.
