Lightrun for Visual Studio Code

Lightrun is a real-time and on-demand observability platform.

With Lightrun, developers can securely add logs, metrics, and traces to running applications, without stopping the application or pushing new code. Lightrun lets you to observe and troubleshoot your application code while it is running locally - in staging or production - right from your IDE, and with no hotfixes, restarts, or redeployments.

Lightrun is agnostic to your production environment: It works across clouds, on bare-metal servers, inside Kubernetes clusters and serverless functions, and pretty much anywhere else your code can run.

Install Lightrun once and use it whenever you need secure, read-only, code-level visibility into your application at runtime.

Quick Start

Start using Lightrun in 3 easy steps.

  1. Install the Lightrun VS Code extension.

  2. Once installation is complete, you will be redirected to create an account in Lightrun Cloud - which offers unlimited Lightrun Actions (Logs, Snapshots, and Metrics).

  3. Following the simple instructions on the registration page, install the Lightrun Agent for your runtime environment. You can also check out the documentation for each runtime:

    • JVM (Java / Scala / Kotlin) agent

    • Python agent

    • Node.js agent

  4. Add your first action to begin observing and troubleshooting your application today!

Features

Lightrun Actions provide you with complete visibility into your application's running code. Use any combination of three Lightrun Actions:

  • Logs
  • Snapshots
  • Metrics

Logs

Lightrun lets you add logs in real-time, while your application is running. Logs are added during runtime and output is visible immediately. When adding Lightrun Logs, there's no need to relaunch the application or release a new version, and every Log line can be routed into your favorite APM or logging tool.

Snapshots

Lightrun Snapshots are virtual breakpoints that don't interrupt or affect the application flow. Snapshots extract all the information you need for investigating tough runtime issues, without pausing the target application. When you need to explore your stack trace and variables thoroughly, you can simply add Lightrun Snapshots in real-time and on-demand.

Metrics

Lightrun lets you acquire in real-time a broad range of performance metrics for timing, synchronization, and business logic. Lightrun Metrics provide immediate answers to identify bottlenecks, with a minimal capped impact on performance. Lightrun Metrics can be routed into APMs or analytics tools, such as Grafana.

Useful commands

You can trigger Lightrun Actions from VSCode's Command Palette.

Open the Command Palette (Command+Shift+P on macOS or Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows/Linux), type in Lightrun... and select it, to get the following commands:
