Tar.gz Viewer

View text files inside .tar.gz / .tgz archives in VS Code without extracting them.

Features

  • Open an archive (.tar.gz / .tgz) and VS Code shows a filterable list of its contents.
  • Click a file to open it as a read-only editor tab, with syntax highlighting based on its extension.
  • Explorer right-click → "Open File from Archive..." for a quick-pick of the files in the archive.
  • Command palette: Tar.gz Viewer: Open File from Archive... (lets you browse for an archive).
  • Supports GNU, POSIX pax, and ustar tar formats (including long file names). Plain uncompressed .tar files work with the command too.
