Koda Rising — VS Code extension

AI coding priced for here. Chat with Koda about your code, let its agent work in your workspace with your approval, run one-shot tasks, build an app or a design, and keep your prepaid balance (in Naira or your own currency) in the status bar — with every turn's cost shown as it happens. Built on @koda-rising/sdk.

Publisher change

Koda Rising now publishes as kodarising.kodarising (publisher kodarising). Releases before 0.14.0 were published as mangozestlabs.koda-rising; the Marketplace cannot move a listing, so that one stops at 0.13.2 and receives no further updates. If you installed it, install Koda Rising from the kodarising publisher and uninstall the old copy. Your sign-in is stored per extension, so sign in once more with Koda: Sign In; your wallet and history are on your account and are unaffected.

Get started

  1. Sign in. Run Koda: Sign In. Your browser opens, you approve there, and the extension stores the key it is issued in VS Code's secret storage — nothing is typed or pasted. In a remote window (SSH, a devcontainer, Codespaces) the same command shows a short code to enter in any browser. Already have an API key? Koda: Set API Token accepts one. Revoke a key any time from Settings → API keys in the dashboard.
  2. Open the Koda sidebar and ask a question, or switch on Agent to let Koda work in your files.
  3. Top up when you need to: Koda: Top Up Wallet (card, USSD, mobile money).

The extension needs a trusted local folder: it is disabled in Restricted Mode and on virtual workspaces (vscode.dev, github.dev), because its agent reads, edits and runs commands on a model's instructions.

Chat

Ask about your code in the sidebar. The file you have open is attached as a chip above the message box — Koda sees it (or the lines you selected) with your next message. Remove the chip to send nothing, and it comes back when you switch files. A file that looks like it holds secrets (.env, keys, credentials) is never sent; a very large file asks you to select the part you mean. Turn on Tools to let Koda search the web and use your installed tools while answering.

Agent mode

Switch on Agent and Koda works in your workspace: it searches, reads and edits files and runs commands to finish the task, then tells you what it did.

  • You approve every write and every command, in a dialog that shows exactly what will happen. Reading a file that looks like it holds secrets also asks first. Reads of ordinary files do not — the workspace folder is the boundary, and the agent cannot follow a symbolic link out of it.
  • Allow for this session remembers your answer to that exact command or kind of file change, until you close the window. Allow everything for this session stops asking about file changes and commands, shell commands included, until you close the window or choose Ask me again; it still asks before reading a secrets file. koda.agent.autoApprove skips the dialogs entirely, secrets files included — off by default; turn it on only for a throwaway workspace.
  • Search honours your .gitignore. Commands run with your environment, minus Koda's own KODA_* settings.
  • Your project's KODA.md (conventions, in the repository) is sent with every request, as it is from the CLI.
  • Koda: Continue an Agent Session… picks up an earlier session with its full context.

Commands

Command What it does
Koda: Sign In / Koda: Set API Token Authorise this editor (browser, device code, or a key)
Koda: Run Task One-shot task with the active file as context: streams the plan and edits, then a diff to preview and apply
Koda: Explain Selection / Koda: Refactor Selection Right-click a selection, or the lightbulb (⌘. / Ctrl+.)
Koda: Runs… / Koda: Resume Last Run Everything Koda is doing for you; reconnect to a run the editor lost track of
Koda: Continue an Agent Session… Resume an earlier agent session
Koda: Skills & Tools Browse the marketplace and your installed skills and tools
Koda: Build an App or Design Generate an app or a design and preview it in the editor
Koda: Show Wallet Balance / Koda: Top Up Wallet Your balance, and a top-up on a local payment rail
Koda: Index Workspace for Retrieval Embed your files so agent runs retrieve from your codebase (gateway in vector mode)
Koda: Re-index Changed Files Re-embed only what changed since the last full index
Koda: Repo Index Status / Koda: Clear Repo Index Inspect or clear the org's index (clearing asks first)
Koda: Refresh Index View / Koda: Clear This Path from Index Buttons in the Explorer → Koda Repo Index view

Index on save

Enable koda.indexOnSave to keep the index fresh as you work: each save re-embeds that file (debounced, silent — progress goes to the Koda Rising output channel). Requires the gateway in vector mode; skipped otherwise.

Settings

Setting Default Purpose
koda.baseUrl Koda's gateway Gateway URL — http://localhost:8080 for a local gateway, or your own host
koda.agent.autoApprove false Run the agent's writes and commands without asking (this window)
koda.indexInclude common source extensions Files to index
koda.indexExclude node_modules,.git,dist,… Paths to skip

koda.indexMaxFileKB 128 Skip files larger than this
koda.indexOnSave false Re-index a file automatically when you save it

Language

The extension follows VS Code's display language: English, French and Arabic (right to left).

Build, test and package (contributors)

  • Build — pnpm build esbuild-bundles the extension host (dist/extension.cjs, with the SDK inlined and vscode external) and every webview panel. pnpm check-types type-checks against the minimum engines.vscode.
  • Test — pnpm test:integration runs the suite in a real VS Code (xvfb-run -a on headless Linux). Point KODA_TEST_GATEWAY/KODA_TEST_TOKEN at a gateway — node ../../scripts/stub-gateway.mjs starts a scripted one — or the gateway-dependent suites skip. The publish workflow runs it against that stub before packaging.
  • Package — pnpm package produces koda-rising-<version>.vsix (@vscode/vsce). Sideload with code --install-extension koda-rising-<version>.vsix.
  • Publish — push a vscode-v<version> tag and publish-vscode.yml publishes it (see docs/koda-rising-publishing-runbook-v1.md); bump version and the CHANGELOG first. It needs a Marketplace PAT (VSCE_PAT); Azure DevOps retires the global PATs the Marketplace requires on 2026-12-01, so this has a shelf life.
