Lemiki: Desktop Pets for Coders

A little cat that lives on your desktop, outside VS Code. It wanders around your screen and reacts to your coding.

You… Your pet…
finish a build that passes jumps, spins and throws confetti 🎉
run tests that pass hops happily
break the build or tests droops, with a little tear
save a file looks up for a moment
start typing glances over, curious
go quiet for a while curls up for a nap

It never blocks your clicks, never steals focus and never shows pop-ups.

You need the Lemiki desktop app

This extension is the pet's "eyes" in VS Code. The pet itself lives in the free Lemiki desktop app for Windows.

  1. Install this extension, and get Lemiki from the Microsoft Store.
  2. Click Lemiki in the status bar, then Start Lemiki. If the app isn't installed yet, you'll get a link to download it.
  3. When the status bar shows ♥ Lemiki, you're connected.

Tip: turn on lemiki.autoStartDesktopApp and the pet starts whenever VS Code does.

How builds and tests are noticed

  • Terminal: uses VS Code's shell integration, a built-in feature that reports which command ran and whether it succeeded. It works in PowerShell, bash, zsh and fish (not cmd.exe).
  • Tasks: Ctrl+Shift+B and Run Task work in any shell.
  • Recognised tools: npm, pnpm, yarn and bun scripts, tsc, vite, webpack, jest, vitest, mocha, pytest, go, cargo, maven, gradle, dotnet, make, cmake and more. Add your own with the lemiki.buildCommandPatterns / lemiki.testCommandPatterns settings.

Settings

Setting Default Meaning
lemiki.enabled true Turn events on or off
lemiki.autoStartDesktopApp false Start the pet when VS Code opens
lemiki.typingIdleMs 3000 Quiet time (ms) before you count as having stopped typing
lemiki.buildCommandPatterns [] Extra regular expressions for build commands
lemiki.testCommandPatterns [] Extra regular expressions for test commands
lemiki.port 47321 Port the pet listens on (change only if something else uses it)
lemiki.desktopAppPath "" Only if Lemiki can't find the desktop app by itself

Privacy

Nothing leaves your computer. Only event names (like build_success) are sent, and only to the Lemiki app on the same machine. No code, file names or commands are sent. Lemiki collects no data: no accounts, analytics or tracking.
