Terminal Color Cycle

Every new terminal gets the next color (and icon) in a rotation, so you can tell your terminals apart at a glance.

Press ⌘T (macOS) or Ctrl+Alt+T (Windows/Linux): green → blue → yellow → magenta → cyan → red → green …

Shortcuts

macOS Windows / Linux Action
⌘T Ctrl+Alt+T New terminal in the next color
⌘W Ctrl+Shift+W Close the focused terminal
⇧⌘T Ctrl+Shift+T Show / hide the terminal panel
Tab / Ctrl+Shift+Tab Tab / Ctrl+Shift+Tab Next / previous terminal (opt-in, see below)

You can also run Terminal: New Terminal (Next Color) from the Command Palette.

Settings

  • terminalColorCycle.colors — the rotation. Each entry has a color (terminal.ansiRed, terminal.ansiGreen, … terminal.ansiWhite) and an optional icon (codicon name).

    "terminalColorCycle.colors": [
      { "color": "terminal.ansiGreen", "icon": "terminal" },
      { "color": "terminal.ansiBlue", "icon": "rocket" }
    ]

  • terminalColorCycle.tabSwitchesTerminals (default false) — make Tab / Ctrl+Shift+Tab switch between terminals while a terminal is focused. This replaces tab completion in your shell.
