Scaffold full-stack projects with SEO metadata directly from VS Code Copilot Chat or Claude Code.

Features

  • 🚀 Scaffold project for multiple tech stacks
  • 📋 Automatic loading of AI instructions

  • 🏗️ Download infrastructure resources per tech stack

After installing the extension, configure your API credentials:

Configuration

Option 1: VS Code Settings UI

  1. Open Settings (Ctrl+, or Cmd+,)
  2. Search for "EIT StackForge"
  3. Set the following:
    • API URL: <api-url>
    • API Username: <username>
    • API Password: <password>
    • API Key: <api-key>
    • Client ID: <client-id>

Option 2: settings.json

Add to your settings.json:

{
  "eitstackforge.apiUrl": "<api-url>",
  "eitstackforge.apiUsername": "<username>",
  "eitstackforge.apiPassword": "<password>",
  "eitstackforge.apiKey": "<api-key>",
  "eitstackforge.clientId": "<client-id>"
}

Option 3: Environment variables (Claude Code / terminal)

The Claude Code skill reads the VS Code settings above automatically. Alternatively, set these environment variables (they take precedence):

export STACKFORGE_API_URL="<api-url>"
export STACKFORGE_API_USERNAME="<username>"
export STACKFORGE_API_PASSWORD="<password>"
export STACKFORGE_API_KEY="<api-key>"
export STACKFORGE_CLIENT_ID="<client-id>"

🔑 Credentials: Contact your team lead or architect team for the API credentials (url, username, password, and API key).

Ways to Use StackForge

StackForge commands are available in three places. The commands are the same; only the way you invoke them differs.

GitHub Copilot - Local / Ask GitHub Copilot - Agent Claude Code
Chat setup Session: Local, Mode: Ask Session: Copilot (always Agent), or Local + Agent mode Claude Code session
Invoke with @eitstackforge /<command> #eitstackforge <command> /eitstackforge <command>
Example @eitstackforge /show-stacks #eitstackforge show-stacks /eitstackforge show-stacks
Plain language ❌ Commands only ✅ ✅
Attach SEO JSON 📎 paperclip icon 📎 paperclip icon Pass the file path
Pipeline actions Confirm via button Confirm via button in Local / Ask mode Claude shows a dry run and asks before running
Best for create-app, update-app, interactive flows Combining StackForge with other agent work Terminal / Claude Code users

GitHub Copilot - Local / Ask mode (@eitstackforge)

Open Copilot Chat (Ctrl+Shift+I or Cmd+Shift+I), set the session type to Local and the mode to Ask, then address the chat participant directly:

@eitstackforge /show-stacks

This is the full interactive experience: input prompts, file attachments, and action buttons (e.g. Execute All Steps Now, Create Pipeline). Recommended for create-app, update-app, and generate-seo-json.

@eitstackforge is only available in Local sessions in Ask mode. If you don't see it in the @ list, check the session type and mode pickers.

GitHub Copilot - Agent mode (#eitstackforge)

Copilot sessions always run in Agent mode (you can also pick Agent mode in a Local session). There, reference the StackForge tool with #eitstackforge followed by a command, or just describe what you want and Copilot will call the tool when relevant:

#eitstackforge download-infra nextjs
Pull the StackForge infrastructure for nextjs and then review the terraform variables.

Interactive actions (buttons, input prompts) are only available in Local / Ask mode; when the agent needs one, it will tell you to switch to a Local session in Ask mode and use @eitstackforge.

Claude Code (/eitstackforge)

Claude Code uses the eitstackforge skill, which talks to the same StackForge API.

The skill is installed automatically. When the extension starts and Claude Code is set up on your machine (~/.claude exists), it copies the skill to ~/.claude/skills/eitstackforge/ and refreshes it on every extension update. No manual steps are needed.

  • Installed Claude Code after the extension? Restart VS Code (or run Developer: Reload Window) so the skill gets installed.
  • The folder is managed by the extension; local edits are overwritten on the next update.

Manual install (without VS Code): copy the claude-skill/eitstackforge folder from this repository into your Claude Code user skills folder:

# macOS / Linux
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills
cp -R claude-skill/eitstackforge ~/.claude/skills/
# Windows (PowerShell)
New-Item -ItemType Directory -Force "$HOME\.claude\skills" | Out-Null
Copy-Item -Recurse -Force claude-skill\eitstackforge "$HOME\.claude\skills\"

The skill must be installed at the user level (~/.claude/skills), not inside a project, because it is used to create projects that don't exist yet.

Requirements: Python 3 and curl (both preinstalled on macOS, most Linux distros, and Windows 10+).

Then, in a new Claude Code session, use the slash command or plain language:

/eitstackforge check-config
/eitstackforge create-app nextjs
Scaffold a new nextjs project using _sitemap_metadata.json

Claude Code differences:

  • SEO JSON: reference the file path instead of attaching it (defaults to _sitemap_metadata.json in the current folder). For generate-seo-json, Claude asks for the values in chat.
  • Setup instructions: after scaffolding, Claude reads INSTRUCTIONS.md and works through every step itself.
  • Pipelines: create-pipeline and run-pipeline-stage always run a dry run first and only proceed after you confirm.

Just Ask in Plain Language

In Copilot Agent mode and Claude Code you don't need to remember command names. Describe what you want and the assistant calls StackForge for you:

You say StackForge runs
"Is my StackForge configuration working?" check-config
"Show me the available StackForge tech stacks" show-stacks
"Create a sitemap metadata file for client Acme, brand AcmeMed, domain https://www.acmemed.com with About and Contact pages" generate-seo-json
"Scaffold a new Next.js project using my _sitemap_metadata.json" create-app nextjs
"Update this Next.js project with the new SEO file" update-app nextjs
"Pull the StackForge infrastructure for nextjs" download-infra nextjs
"Add the Copilot agents for our Next.js stack" download-agents nextjs
"Set up the Azure DevOps pipeline for this repo" create-pipeline
"Run the DestroyQc stage for release 1-0-1" run-pipeline-stage DestroyQc\|1-0-1

You can also chain steps in one request, e.g. "Show me the stacks, then scaffold a .NET 8 app and pull its infrastructure."

In Copilot Agent mode, if Copilot doesn't pick up StackForge on its own, add #eitstackforge to your message. With @eitstackforge in Local / Ask mode, use the slash commands instead.

Usage

The examples below use Copilot Local / Ask mode syntax. In Agent mode use #eitstackforge <command>; in Claude Code use /eitstackforge <command> (see Ways to Use StackForge).

0. Verify API Configuration

Before generating projects, ensure your API credentials are correctly configured by running:

@eitstackforge /check-config

If the command returns a success message without errors, your API configuration is correct.

1. Check Available Tech Stacks

Open Copilot Chat (Ctrl+Shift+I or Cmd+Shift+I) and type:

@eitstackforge /show-stacks

This will display all supported project types (e.g., NextJS, .NET 8, etc.).

2. SEO JSON Format

Attach a _sitemap_metadata.json file with the following structure to provide SEO metadata for your project:

{
    "Client": "Acme Corp",
    "Brand": "AcmeMed",
    "Project": "AcmeMed Patient Site",
    "SiteDomain": "https://www.acmemed.com",
    "Pages": [
        {
            "Name": "Home",
            "PageURL": "https://www.acmemed.com/",
            "Tags": [
                {
                    "TagName": "og:title",
                    "TagValue": "AcmeMed | Official Patient Website"
                }
            ],
            "ImageInfo": [
                {
                    "ImageTitle": null,
                    "ImageAltText": "AcmeMed logo.",
                    "ImageRelativePath": "https://www.acmemed.com/content/images/acmemed-logo.png",
                    "ImageName": "acmemed-logo.png"
                }
            ]
        }
    ]
}

If you don't have this file ready, you can create a simple one with the following command:

@eitstackforge /generate-seo-json

This will prompt you for the necessary information and generate a basic _sitemap_metadata.json file that you can then customize.

3. Generate a Project

To generate a project in Copilot Chat, type:

@eitstackforge /create-app <stack>

Replace <stack> with your chosen tech stack (run @eitstackforge /show-stacks to see options).

Then attach your _sitemap_metadata.json file using the 📎 paperclip icon (in Claude Code, reference the file path instead).

4. Create Pipeline

To create a new pipeline (e.g., for CI/CD) for only new projects, type:

@eitstackforge /create-pipeline

5. Run Pipeline Stage

To run a specific stage of the pipeline (e.g., destroyqc|1-0-1), type:

@eitstackforge /run-pipeline-stage <stage>|<branch-version>

6. Update Existing Project

To update an existing project in Copilot Chat, type:

@eitstackforge /update-app <stack>

Replace <stack> with your tech stack and attach the updated _sitemap_metadata.json file using the 📎 paperclip icon (in Claude Code, reference the file path instead).

7. Import AI Agents

To download the GitHub Actions workflows (.github folder) for a specific tech stack:

@eitstackforge /download-agents <stack>

The contents will be extracted directly into your workspace root, preserving the folder structure (e.g. .github/workflows/...).

8. Import Infrastructure

To download the infrastructure resources (.infrastructure folder) for a specific tech stack:

@eitstackforge /download-infra <stack>

The contents will be extracted directly into your workspace root, preserving the folder structure (e.g. .infrastructure/terraform/...).

9. Auto-Execution

After scaffolding, the extension automatically:

  1. Loads INSTRUCTIONS.md or INSTRUCTIONS_UPDATE.md
  2. Displays the instructions for confirmation
  3. Begins executing all steps automatically - no manual copy/paste needed!

The agent will use the _sitemap_metadata.json file if present and execute all instructions. In Claude Code, the skill reads the instructions file and executes the steps directly.
