Adaptive Comments

This extension improves how commenting works for single-line and multi-line blocks of code.

Solutions that use VS Code's built-in editor.action.commentLine command do not move the caret down. Macros that add a "move down" action usually place the caret at the beginning of the next line.

This causes repeated shortcuts to drift across the code.

What does this extension do?

1. Comment and Caret placement

Adaptive Comments smartly checks the surrounding lines to figure out where to place the comment, similar to how JetBrains IDEs do it. After that the caret is moved down at the same column, if possible.

This makes it possible to repeatedly press the shortcut to comment a block of code without the caret drifting left or right.

2. Fixing empty uncommented lines

When commenting out a block of code, VS Code does not comment empty lines. This extension fixes that, so the entire block is handled consistently.

Usage

The extension deliberately ships without default keybindings to avoid overriding or conflicting with shortcuts you already use.

To use it, add a keybinding to your keybindings.json file:
