BY Language — Wolf Edition
Created by Byloch Official 🐺
A developer-friendly programming language project and Visual Studio Code extension for .by files.
BY Language is an experimental, multi-purpose language project that brings a simple custom syntax together with web-building blocks and optional Python/PHP integration.
What is included
.by language recognition in VS Code
- Syntax highlighting and bracket/comment configuration
- Code snippets for common BY structures
- BY Wolf file icon theme
BY: Run Current File command
- JavaScript-based BY runtime and CLI
- Example programs and language reference
What can you build with BY?
The project is designed to grow toward:
- Websites and web interfaces (HTML/CSS/JavaScript blocks)
- Small scripts and automation
- Backend experiments and API prototypes
- Python- and PHP-assisted workflows
- Learning projects and developer tools
Current status: early preview (v0.1.1). This is not yet a mature general-purpose compiler. Some advanced ideas are roadmap items, not implemented features. Review ../docs/LANGUAGE-REFERENCE.md and ../docs/ROADMAP.md for the exact current syntax and limitations.
Install the VS Code extension
- Open this folder in a terminal.
- Install the VS Code packaging tool:
npm install -g @vscode/vsce
- Package the extension:
vsce package
- In VS Code, run Extensions: Install from VSIX... and select the generated
.vsix.
- To show the wolf file icon, run Preferences: File Icon Theme and select BY Wolf Icons.
Run BY programs
Requires Node.js.
node ../runtime/by.js run ../runtime/examples/hello.by
node ../runtime/by.js check ../runtime/examples/hello.by
node ../runtime/by.js build ../runtime/examples/webapp.by
The VS Code command BY: Run Current File needs the runtime path. Set byLanguage.runtimePath to the absolute path of runtime/by.js in your extracted project folder.
Python/PHP blocks require their respective interpreters installed and available on PATH.
Marketplace publishing
The extension manifest currently uses the proposed publisher ID bylochofficial. You must first create/claim that exact Publisher ID at https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/manage. If it is unavailable, replace publisher in package.json with the ID you actually own, then package and publish using your own Marketplace credentials. The extension is not public on the Marketplace until you complete that process.
