SeedForge — realistic seed data from your Prisma schema

Stop hand-writing fixtures. SeedForge reads your schema.prisma and generates realistic, type-correct test data — exported to JSON, SQL, or CSV — without ever leaving VS Code.

Point it at a model, pick a row count, choose a format. Done.

Features

Free (this edition)

  • One-click generation from any schema.prisma in your workspace.
  • Smart, realistic values. Field names are matched to the right faker generator — email → an email, price → a price, firstName → a name, city / phone / avatar / slug and many more.
  • Correct scalar types for String, Int, BigInt, Float, Decimal, Boolean, DateTime, Json, Bytes, arrays, and optional fields.
  • Enums done right. Enum fields get a random member each row, so your data actually varies instead of collapsing to one value.
  • Three export formats: JSON, SQL INSERT statements, or CSV — written to seedforge-output/<Model>.<ext> in your workspace.
  • Zero config, zero telemetry. No account, no sign-in, no network calls.

Pro — coming soon

A future paid upgrade (one-time key, no subscription) is planned to add:

  • Related tables with foreign-key-consistent data across models.
  • Bulk volumes above the free row limit.
  • Direct insert into Postgres / MySQL.
  • AI-realistic values by column context, using your own API key (BYOK).

Pro features are not included in this build and are listed here as a roadmap. The free edition is fully functional on its own.

Usage

  1. Open a folder that contains a schema.prisma file.
  2. Open the Command Palette (Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+P) and run SeedForge: Generate Seed Data.
  3. Pick a model (one table per run in the free edition).
  4. Enter how many rows you want.
  5. Choose the output format — JSON, SQL INSERT, or CSV.
  6. The file is written to seedforge-output/ and SeedForge offers to open it.

Relation fields are skipped in the free edition (foreign-key consistency is a planned Pro feature); SeedForge tells you when a model has them.

Supported schemas

  • Prisma (schema.prisma) — the supported schema source today.

Scalar types recognised: String, Int, BigInt, Float, Decimal, Boolean, DateTime, Json, Bytes, plus enums. Attributes understood: @id, @unique, @default(...), @relation(...), and the ? (optional) and [] (array) modifiers.

Other schema sources (Drizzle, SQL dumps, Django models) are on the roadmap but are not in this edition.

Requirements

  • Visual Studio Code 1.85.0 or newer.
  • A workspace containing at least one schema.prisma file.
  • No database connection, no runtime dependencies, nothing to install.

Privacy

SeedForge runs entirely on your machine. It reads the schema file you point it at and writes output into your workspace — that's it.

  • No telemetry, no analytics, no account or login.
  • No network requests. Your schema and generated data never leave your computer.
