Aurene for VS Code

Aurene tracks your coding time automatically and splits it into human and AI work. See it all on your dashboard at aurene.eu.

Works in VS Code, Cursor, VSCodium and other VS Code-based editors.

Setup

  1. Sign in at aurene.eu and copy your API key from Settings.
  2. Run Aurene: Set API Key and paste it. The extension checks the key right away.

Today's coding time then shows in the status bar. Its tooltip adds your time on the current branch over the last year. Click it for the menu.

What is tracked

A heartbeat is sent when you switch files, when you save, and at most every 2 minutes per file while you type or move the cursor. The gap between two heartbeats counts as coding time when it's under 15 minutes.

Each heartbeat carries the file path, project (the workspace folder), language, git branch, category (coding, AI coding or debugging), how many changed lines came from you and from AI, the editor, OS and machine name.

An edit counts as AI when:

  • Claude Code made it. These are exact: the extension reads each Edit and Write from Claude Code's transcripts, with the lines it added and removed, even in files you never opened;
  • it is a non-paste insertion of 40 or more characters, or two or more newlines (inline completions and chat "apply");
  • it lands in a file you're not focused on (editor agent mode).

Undo, redo, git checkouts and formatter-only edits are ignored.

Claude Code. The extension reads the transcripts in ~/.claude/projects. Each file edit is sent as an AI coding heartbeat with its exact line count, and token usage is reported per model and project. Edits to Claude Code's own files in ~/.claude and to temporary files don't count. No prompts, replies or code are sent. It backfills the last 30 days. Turn it off with aurene.trackClaudeCode.

Commits. Every 10 minutes the extension reads the last 100 commits of each open repository through VS Code's git and sends the ones whose author email matches your git config user.email, from the last 30 days. Turn it off with aurene.trackCommits.

AI Changes

The AI Changes view in the Explorer lists every AI edit on this machine, newest first and grouped by day. Each entry shows the file, the lines added and removed, the time, and an icon for what made it: Claude Code, an inline completion or an editor agent. Click an entry to open the file at the changed line, which makes it quick to review what AI wrote. Back-to-back edits to one file within a minute show as one entry. The view keeps the latest 500 changes, stays on this machine, and can be cleared from its title bar.

AI highlights

Lines AI wrote get a tinted background and a mark in the scroll bar, so you can see at a glance what to review. Hover one to see what wrote it and when. Lines are recognized by their content, so the tint follows them when code moves, and a line you edit yourself loses it. Very short lines (}, a blank) count when they sit inside or close an AI block. The tint comes from the AI Changes on this machine. Toggle it with Aurene: Toggle AI Highlights, the eye in the AI Changes view or aurene.highlightAiLines. Theme colors: aurene.aiLineBackground and aurene.aiLineRuler.

Agent time. The extension also measures how long Claude Code worked on its own: from each prompt or response to the next response, leaving out waits over 15 minutes. Subagents and parallel sessions count once. The dashboard shows it next to your own coding time.

Paused. While tracking is paused nothing is recorded, and Claude Code work done meanwhile isn't reported later.

Offline. Heartbeats are kept on disk while Aurene is unreachable, up to 10,000, and sent once it's back. That includes heartbeats from windows that have since closed.

Commands

Command
Aurene: Show Menu The status bar menu
Aurene: Open Dashboard Opens aurene.eu in the browser
Aurene: Set API Key Stores the key in the OS keychain and checks it
Aurene: Remove API Key Stops sending until a key is set again
Aurene: Pause Tracking / Resume Tracking Applies to all windows
Aurene: Clear AI Changes Empties the AI Changes view, and with it the highlights
Aurene: Toggle AI Highlights Shows or hides the tint on lines AI wrote
Aurene: Show Log The "Aurene" output channel

Settings

Setting Default
aurene.exclude [] Globs of files never tracked, such as **/secret/** or *.env. A glob that doesn't start with /, ** or a drive letter matches at any depth.
aurene.trackClaudeCode true Track Claude Code's edits and token usage.
aurene.statusBar true Show today's time in the status bar.
aurene.highlightAiLines true Tint the lines AI wrote in the editor.
aurene.trackCommits true Send your own commits (hash, time, project, first line of the message) so the dashboard shows the time behind each.
aurene.hideFileNames false Send only each file's extension instead of its path, and no commit messages.

Remote development

Over Remote SSH, WSL or in a dev container, the extension runs on the remote side. File paths, the git branch, the machine name and Claude Code transcripts come from there, and that side needs to reach aurene.eu.
