Requirements
VS Code 1.85.0 or higher
Git installed and configured
OpenAI API key
Setup
Install the extension from VS Code Marketplace
Configure your OpenAI API key in VS Code settings:
Open VS Code settings (Cmd+, on macOS or Ctrl+, on Windows/Linux)
Search for "GitSmart"
Enter your OpenAI API key in the "OpenAI API Key" field
Usage
Make changes to your code
Open the command palette (Cmd+Shift+P / Ctrl+Shift+P)
Type "Smart Commit: Create Commit" and press Enter
The extension will:
Analyze your changes and suggest optimal groupings
Filter out debug artifacts
Stage the relevant changes
Generate a descriptive commit message
Show you a comprehensive review panel
Review the suggested changes and commit message
Click "Approve" to commit the changes
