CS Work Hub for VS Code

CS Work Hub is a local-first project dashboard for desktop VS Code. Create or add project folders, browse project files, use common editor tools, and explore programming and computer science guides. This is an early preview; some workflows and operating systems have not yet been fully verified.

Get started

After installation, open the Command Palette and run CS WORK HUB: Open Dashboard, or select CS Work Hub in the status bar. Add an existing folder or create an empty, Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, web, Java, C, C++, C# or Rust starter. Some starters need a language runtime or compiler installed separately. Removing a project reference does not delete its files.

Enable csworkhub.openOnStartup to open the dashboard automatically. Desktop VS Code 1.90 or later is required; VS Code in a browser is not supported.

Projects, GitHub and learning

Projects can browse files inside a registered folder. Git, node_modules, .venv, pycache and symbolic links are hidden; each folder shows up to 250 entries. GitHub sign-in uses VS Code authentication and lets you inspect accessible repositories. The requested GitHub repo scope permits write access, although the extension uses it to read repository information. Repositories open in your browser; the extension does not synchronize them.

Guides offers curated courses, videos, documentation and roadmaps with search, filters and practice projects. External resources may change, and some providers offer optional paid certificates. In Restricted Mode, project browsing and guides remain available; terminal and task execution require a trusted workspace.

Moving from the older preview

This Marketplace extension has a different identity and separate local storage from devhub-local.work-hub-native-preview. Installing it does not remove or automatically copy the old preview or its data. Keep the old extension installed until you have verified your data. In the old dashboard, use Tools to export a private backup of notes, tasks and learning progress, then use Tools in CS Work Hub to restore missing records. Project references are not in that backup: add your existing folders again. The folders themselves are not modified by registration. Keep an independent backup of your projects and data.

The command CS WORK HUB: Import DEV-HUB Data separately imports file-backed notes, tasks and progress from the older DEV//HUB prototype into an empty store. It does not import browser-local data or project references. Original files remain unchanged.

Privacy and limitations

Data is stored on your device in VS Code extension storage. Run CS WORK HUB: Open Data Folder to locate it. Backups may contain personal information; keep them private. Local writes use a lock, but external editors and network filesystems are not protected. GitHub synchronization, project-reference backup and complete curricula are not implemented.
