CanopyAI

The Operating System for Engineering Memory

CanopyAI is an AI-powered Developer Memory Platform that runs natively inside VS Code. It automatically surfaces the historical context, architectural decisions, and past regressions related to the exact file you are looking at.

Stop asking "Why was this written this way?" CanopyAI already knows.

Features

 Ambient Context
As you navigate between files in VS Code, CanopyAI silently fetches the engineering memory associated with that file and displays it in the sidebar — related issues, dev notes, and reusable components, without ever leaving your editor.

Issues, Dev Notes & Reusable Components
Three color-coded memory primitives, always in sync between the extension and the dashboard: Issues (orange), Development Notes (blue), and Reusable Components (purple). Each is AI-enriched automatically — no manual tagging.

 AI Chat Sessions
Ask CanopyAI about the active file, past decisions, or prior bugs — from the sidebar or as its own editor tab, both live-synced. Conversations are saved as named Sessions you can reopen or delete later, and a "search across all my projects" toggle widens recall beyond the current project.

 Secure Authentication
CanopyAI uses a deep-link URI authentication flow. Connect your GitHub account via the secure web portal, and your session token is sent directly to VS Code's encrypted Secret Storage.

 Pre-Mortem Analysis
Before you commit a complex change, run Pre-Mortem. CanopyAI analyzes your active file against past regressions and architecture notes, warning you of potential risks before they reach production.

Also included

  • Edit Files with AI — describe a change in its own tab, CanopyAI proposes edits across the files you pick, and you review each one as a native diff before anything is applied to disk.
  • Project Checkpoints — snapshot what's done, what's left, and overall status on the current branch; indexed into memory for later "what's the status?" questions.
  • Cross-project search — "Find Related Issues" and AI Chat's cross-project toggle can scan every project you own for a prior fix, never another user's data.
  • Unlink Workspace — disconnect the current workspace from its project without signing out of your CanopyAI account.

Getting Started

  1. Install the extension.
  2. Open the CanopyAI sidebar.
  3. Click Connect.
  4. Authenticate via GitHub on the web portal.
  5. Import a GitHub repository (or link an existing CanopyAI project), and watch your engineering memory build.

Full walkthrough of every feature: see USER_GUIDE.md in the main repository.
