CodeVista

Interactive AI-Powered Coding Assistant by FPT Software AI Center

CodeVista, developed by the AI Center at FPT Software, is an intelligent coding assistant designed to help developers understand, write, review, and improve code more efficiently.

Powered by an agentic AI workflow, CodeVista can understand your workspace, gather relevant context, interact with development tools, and assist with multi-step coding tasks while keeping developers in control of every important action.

Key Features

Core Agent Capabilities

Agent Workflow

CodeVista follows an intelligent Plan → Act → Observe → Review workflow. The Agent can break complex requests into smaller steps, explore relevant files, edit code, execute supported commands, observe results, and review changes before completing the task.

Tool Calling

The Agent can use available tools to gather information, analyze context, search the codebase, execute actions, and summarize results. This allows CodeVista to handle more complex development workflows beyond simple question-and-answer interactions.

Codebase Intelligence

Instead of loading the entire repository into the conversation, CodeVista intelligently searches for the files and code sections that are most relevant to the current task.

This helps provide more accurate answers while using context efficiently. Project notes and important decisions can also be retained to support future development sessions.

Cross-Surface Experience

CodeVista is designed to provide a consistent Agent experience across supported development environments, including the VS Code extension and the upcoming CodeVista CLI.

The same Agent capabilities, tools, context handling, and permission model can be used across these environments.

Conversational & Chat Experience

Chat Panel

The Chat Panel is the primary interface for interacting with CodeVista.

Developers can ask technical questions, provide error messages, request code changes, generate code, or ask the Agent to investigate issues directly from the development environment.

Add Context

CodeVista allows developers to provide additional context using @ or the + Add Context action.

You can attach relevant:

  • Files
  • Folders
  • Code snippets

Providing specific context helps CodeVista better understand your request and generate responses that are more relevant to your project.

Prompt Library

Save frequently used instructions in My Prompts and reuse them whenever needed.

The Prompt Library helps developers standardize common workflows without repeatedly writing the same prompts.

Prompt Improvement

CodeVista can improve a prompt before it is sent to the AI.

With one action, a short or unclear request can be rewritten into a more structured and effective prompt, helping the Agent better understand the developer's intention.

Suggested Next Prompts

After each response, CodeVista can recommend up to three contextual follow-up prompts.

These suggestions help developers continue exploring an issue, refine the generated solution, or move naturally to the next development task.

Response Actions

Generated responses can be quickly applied to your workspace using actions such as:

  • Insert code at the current cursor position
  • Replace selected code
  • Copy content
  • Insert generated content into a new file

This reduces the need to manually copy and paste code between the Chat Panel and editor.

Conversation History

CodeVista keeps conversations organized within each workspace.

Developers can review previous conversations using different sorting options, including:

  • Newest
  • Oldest
  • Most Tokens
  • Most Relevant

This makes it easier to return to previous discussions and continue development tasks with existing context.

Coding Assistance

Skills

Skills are reusable, task-specific capabilities that help CodeVista perform specialized development workflows.

Skills provide the Agent with additional instructions and knowledge for particular tasks and can be automatically applied when relevant.

Developers can enable or disable Skills depending on their project requirements.

Slash Commands

Type / in the Chat Panel to quickly access predefined development commands.

Available commands include actions such as:

  • /init – initialize project context
  • /brainstorming – explore ideas and possible approaches
  • /debug – investigate and resolve coding issues
  • /review – review code and identify potential improvements
  • /compact – reduce and optimize conversation context

Slash Commands provide a faster and more consistent way to perform frequently used development tasks.

Extensibility & Integrations

MCP – Model Context Protocol

CodeVista supports Model Context Protocol (MCP), allowing developers to connect the Agent with external tools and data sources.

MCP can be used to integrate resources such as:

  • Source repositories
  • Documentation systems
  • APIs
  • Databases
  • Development tools
  • Enterprise services

Developers can configure MCP servers through the codevista_mcp_settings.json configuration file. Once configured and connected, MCP tools become available for the Agent to use during development workflows.

For the current configuration flow, users open the configuration, add the server settings, and verify the connection.

Customization, Security & Governance

Single Sign-On (SSO)

CodeVista supports Single Sign-On using FPT accounts, providing developers with a faster and more secure authentication experience.

Instead of maintaining a separate CodeVista account, FPT users can authenticate using their existing corporate identity.

Workspace Rules

Workspace Rules allow developers to define persistent instructions that CodeVista automatically follows when working within a project.

Rules can be used to define:

  • Coding standards
  • Architecture conventions
  • Project scope
  • Development preferences
  • Team-specific instructions

Multiple rule files can be created, edited, enabled, or disabled depending on the project.

.codevistaignore

The .codevistaignore file allows developers to prevent specific files or folders from being included in the Agent's context.

This is useful for excluding generated files, sensitive resources, large directories, or files that are not relevant to AI-assisted development.

Permission Model

CodeVista keeps developers in control of actions performed by the Agent.

Operations such as:

  • Modifying files
  • Executing shell commands
  • Calling external services

may require user approval before execution.

Commands identified as potentially risky always require explicit confirmation, helping reduce the risk of unintended changes to the development environment.

Feedback & Support

Feedback

Developers can provide feedback directly to the CodeVista team when they encounter issues, need assistance, or want to suggest improvements.

Feedback categories include:

  • Bug Report – report unexpected behavior or errors
  • Feature Request – suggest new features or improvements
  • Support Ticket – request assistance from the CodeVista team
  • Comments – share general feedback and suggestions

Supporting information and screenshots can be attached when necessary to help the CodeVista team investigate the issue.

Deployment & Platform Options

VS Code Extension

CodeVista is available as a VS Code extension, including both the legacy version and the new Agent-powered experience.

The extension brings CodeVista directly into the developer's coding environment, allowing developers to interact with AI without leaving the IDE.

CodeVista CLI

CodeVista CLI is currently in development.

The CLI is designed to bring the same Agent workflow and development capabilities into terminal-based workflows.

On-Premises & Private Cloud

CodeVista supports deployment for organizations that require greater control over their development environment and infrastructure.

A .vsix extension package can be distributed for private or self-hosted environments.

This deployment option is suitable for enterprise environments with stricter security, compliance, or infrastructure requirements.
