Type Paste

Pastes text by typing it out piece by piece, so Ctrl+Z undoes one piece at a time instead of removing the whole paste.

Usage

  • Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on Mac): start typing the clipboard text.
  • Escape while typing: pause.
  • B while paused: continue typing from where it stopped, at the current cursor.
  • Escape while paused: discard the rest, so B types a normal letter again.

Status bar buttons

  • ⌨ 10 ms — always visible; click to change speed, even mid-paste (applies immediately).
  • Pause / Continue — appears only while a paste is typing or paused.
  • ✕ — appears when paused; discards the rest of the paste.

Keyboard lock

Click the 🔓 button in the status bar to lock the keyboard. Every key inside VS Code is ignored except Esc (so you can still pause). Click the same button (🔒 Keyboard locked) with your mouse/trackpad to unlock. Works on any keyboard layout. Note: it only affects VS Code — not other apps, the integrated terminal, or system keys like Alt+Tab / Windows key.

Changing speed

Click the ⌨ 10 ms button in the status bar, press Ctrl+Alt+T, or run Type Paste: Set Typing Speed from the Command Palette. Pick a preset or choose Custom to type any number.

Settings

  • typePaste.unit — character, word, or line: how much one Ctrl+Z removes.
  • typePaste.delay — milliseconds between pieces (0 = fastest).
  • typePaste.instantAbove — clipboard text longer than this is pasted normally.
  • typePaste.enabled — turn off to get normal paste back.

Notes

Uses the primary cursor only. Avoid typing in the same file while a paste is in progress.
