Developer Productivity Extension Installer

The Developer Productivity Extension Installer is designed to enhance developer productivity and ensure consistent tooling across Microsoft engineering enviroments. Governed by organizational policy to ensure unified, policy-driven approach the installer ensures everyone has consistent, essential, approved set of Visual Studio Code extensions installed. This extension is designed to streamline onboarding, improve productivity, and maintain compliance, while remaining transparent and user-consent driven.

What this extension does

• 📦 Installs a baseline set of approved VS Code extensions
• 🔄 Automatically keeps extensions in sync with organizational policy
• 🧩 Detects new required extensions and installs them when policy changes
• ▶️ Runs automatically on VS Code startup after initial consent

What this extension does NOT do

• ❌ It does not modify your code or repositories
• ❌ It does not silently install extensions without consent
• ❌ It does not override your personal settings

All extensions are installed individually using standard VS Code mechanisms.

Extensions installed

Depending on policy, this extension will install the below default extensions as well as any others recommended by your organization's admin:

• ES Chat for GitHub Copilot
• MAI AI Telemetry

The exact list may evolve over time as policy is updated.

Commands

This extension contributes the following command:

• Developer Productivity Installer: Sync Extensions
  Manually checks policy and installs any missing required extensions.

You can access it via the Command Palette (Ctrl+Shift+P).

Requirements

• Visual Studio Code v1.109.2 or later
• Network access to fetch the policy file

• No background services
• No data collection beyond extension installation telemetry
