TalePal is a local-first writing companion for VS Code — a dialog partner, not a ghostwriter. It develops, organizes, and refines your stories with you, surfacing the right context from your chapters, characters, and world at the right moment — while you stay in full control of every word.
Local AI is the focus, not a fallback. With Ollama or LM Studio your manuscript never leaves your machine — gemma-class models run on a MacBook (M-series, 16 GB RAM) or a PC with an 8 GB+ GPU. Pay once, no subscription; add a cloud API key only if you want to.

What TalePal does
- Write in Markdown — chapters, characters, worldbuilding, all in plain text files you own
- Talk to your story — five creative dialogue modes (Story, Character, Plot, Worldbuilding, Creative Exploration) that understand your manuscript
- Analyze your work — a 9-step pipeline extracts characters, plot structure, timeline, and worldbuilding from your chapters
- Build a wiki — worldbuilding entries auto-organized by category with cross-references
- Export as EPUB — generate ebooks directly from VS Code
Creative Dialogue Modes
TalePal works through conversation. Each mode is a specialized AI partner:
| Mode |
Focus |
| Story Development |
Prose, scenes, dialogue — writing assistance for your current chapter |
| Character Development |
Psychology, relationships, motivations, arcs |
| Plot Development |
Story structure, timeline, plot events |
| Worldbuilding |
Geography, cultures, history — with an integrated wiki |
| Creative Exploration |
Free brainstorming without constraints |
The AI adapts its context to the mode — it loads the right characters, chapters, and world details for each conversation.
These five dialogue modes plus the Dashboard (review & analysis, below) make up TalePal's six integrated modes — each works on its own, and together they share one story context.
Dashboard & Analysis
Import or write your chapters, then run the analysis pipeline. TalePal generates an interactive dashboard with character profiles, chapter breakdowns, plot structure, and more.

Deep character profiles with role badges, motivations, and chapter-by-chapter tracking:

Worldbuilding Wiki
A built-in wiki system with 9 categories (Geography, Cultures, History, Politics, Religion, Technology, Economy, Languages, Custom). Entries are extracted from your chapters or created manually, with [[wiki links]] for cross-referencing.

AI — tuned for local
TalePal is model-tuned, not model-agnostic. We put real effort into keeping context small and engineering specifically for local AI — trimming a typical request from ~30,000 tokens down to ~5,000 at nearly the same answer quality. Local models like Gemma run your whole manuscript on-device and score within a few points of the cloud — privacy with essentially no quality penalty.

Philosophy
TalePal is built on a simple belief: AI should enhance your creativity, not replace it.
We don't ghostwrite. We ask questions that help you think deeper.
We don't impose structure. We offer tools you can use or ignore.
We don't lock your data. Every file is yours, always readable, always portable.
Your voice. Your story. Your way.
You create. TalePal assists.
