ASP.Net Security Token Service Web Application

If you have tried to convert an existing ASP.Net STS Web Site created through the Windows Identity Foundation SDK over to an ASP.Net STS Web Application, you already know of the many problems encountered in trying to get the entire solution to compile and work correctly.

This solution is a starting point for those individuals who prefer to work with an ASP.Net STS Web Application vs. an ASP.Net STS Web Site project.

There are several limitations in this initial project template:

  1. The built-in Web Server port is hard coded to port 1502 (i.e. http://localhost:1502) to avoid having to alter the FederationMetadata.xml file.
  2. The Project Template does not have built-in support for the STS Template Wizard that normally ships with the Windows Identity Foundation SDK samples.

You can work around the lack of support for the built-in STS Template Wizard through the use of one of these tools:

  1. Run the Federation Utility Tool once again from the Visual Studio Tools menu
  2. Use the STS Federation Metadata Wizard: http://stsmetadataeditor.codeplex.com/
  3. Use the STS Federation Metadata Generator: http://weblogs.thinktecture.com/cweyer/2009/05/geneva-based-ws-federation-metadata-document-generation-wizard-or-oops-i-did-it-again.html

I hope to incorporate additional features and functionality in future Project Template release versions, but at least this should be a good starting point for developers like myself that have had to suffer the pains of modifying the STS Web Site over to an STS Web Application.

System Requirements: Windows Identity Foundation SDK 4.0, Windows Identity Foundation Runtime
