Work Item Sheets

Why Work Item Sheets

Azure DevOps Boards is powerful — but editing work items one by one is slow. If you've ever wished you could just open a spreadsheet and bulk-edit your backlog, update statuses across projects, or sort and filter your entire sprint in seconds, this is it.

  • Bulk edit anything — update titles, assignees, states, priorities, and custom fields inline across dozens of items at once.
  • Multi-project in one view — combine work items from multiple projects into a single sheet. No more tab-switching.
  • Feels like Excel, lives in DevOps — familiar keyboard navigation, column resizing, inline editing. Zero learning curve.
  • Always in sync — changes save back to Azure DevOps in real time. No import/export, no copy-paste.
  • Works with your existing fields — custom fields, area paths, iteration paths, tags — all visible and editable.

How it works

  1. Open Boards → Sheets from any Azure DevOps project.
  2. Click + New sheet and choose your projects, work item types, and filters.
  3. Edit work items directly in the sheet — inline, fast, and auto-saving.
  4. Star sheets you use often, share them with your team, or use templates to get started in seconds.

Limitations & notes

  • Work Item Sheets requires Azure DevOps (cloud). Azure DevOps Server (on-premises) is not currently supported.
  • Import from Excel is coming soon.
  • The sheet view is optimised for work items with standard and custom fields — boards-specific features like swimlanes are not replicated in the sheet view.
  • Very large queries (5,000+ work items) may experience slower initial load times.

Privacy & data

Work Item Sheets stores only the minimal configuration needed to display and operate your sheets — such as saved sheet definitions, column layouts, and filter preferences. This data is stored within your Azure DevOps organization's extension storage.

We as a vendor have no access to your work item data. The extension reads and writes work items exclusively on your behalf, using your Azure DevOps permissions. It does not transmit your data to any external service.

Permissions

The extension requests the following permissions for specific, limited reasons:

  • vso.extension.data — read saved sheet configurations and layout preferences stored in your organization.
  • vso.extension.data_write — save sheet configurations, column layouts, and filter preferences in your organization.
  • vso.graph — verify that the user installing or purchasing the app holds the required Project Collection Administrator role.
  • vso.memberentitlementmanagement — read the number of billable users in your Azure DevOps organization to determine the correct license tier.
  • vso.work — read work items and field data to display them in the sheet view.
  • vso.work_write — save changes made to work items directly from the sheet back to Azure DevOps.pes for specific reasons:
