DevOps InControl

Stay in control of your Azure DevOps projects — without leaving Azure DevOps.

DevOps InControl adds a complete project-management and quality toolkit directly inside your Azure DevOps project: proactive backlog quality checks, bug triage, pull-request monitoring, velocity & capacity planning, roadmap planning, developer assessment, sprint and template tooling, pipeline insight and bulk work-item creation — all as native hubs and dashboard widgets.

Everything runs client-side as the signed-in user — there is no server to host, no Personal Access Token to manage and no data leaves your organization.

Features

Dashboard

A single overview of every configured project. Run the quality checks you care about, see issue counts per project on compact cards, hide all-clear projects, and enable auto-refresh to keep the board live. Jump straight from a flagged check into the detailed issue list.

Work Item Quality Checks

Continuously surface backlog hygiene problems, configurable per project (scope by team or area path, with ignore patterns):

  • Orphans — items missing a required parent (with process-aware parent rules)
  • Stale sprint items — untouched work in the active sprint
  • Missing estimates — story points / remaining work not set
  • Unassigned — active work with no owner
  • Bug triage — unassigned/untriaged bugs that need an owner and a home
  • Pull-request checks — approval-ready, unreviewed, stale and release/resolved PRs
  • Tag overview — a roll-up of work-item tags across the project

Bug Triage

Triage incoming bugs interactively: assign an owner, set the target sprint, mark a bug as a duplicate (search by work item ID or title), and add comments with @mentions — all from one modal. Member availability is shown as capacity vs. assigned remaining work so you can route bugs to people who actually have time.

Tip: Capture crisp repro screenshots and screen recordings with the free Fenetre Capture tool, then attach them to the bug for faster, clearer triage.

Pull Request Monitor

See every active pull request across the project with flags for unreviewed, rejected, stale and approval-ready PRs, with drill-down per project.

Capacity

Plan team capacity for any sprint: per-member activities (Development, Testing and more), capacity per day, and a sprint calendar for days off (including recurring weekly days off). Copy capacity from the previous sprint and push the result straight back to Azure DevOps.

Velocity

Calculate a team's velocity from a completed sprint and project it onto a target sprint, with an adjustable story-point override. The Velocity Metrics view charts initial scope vs. burned story points per project, with prognosis trend lines and per-project / per-sprint filtering.

Roadmap

A portfolio roadmap board with quarter and sprint timeline views. Drag bars to set start/target dates, draw dependency links between items, reorder projects and pick each project's colour, overlay team sprints on the quarter view, create work items inline, and export the board to PNG or PDF.

Dev Assessment

PR cycle time, reviewer responsiveness and iteration metrics computed from your completed pull requests.

Text to Workitem

Paste free-form text (meeting notes, a spec, a checklist) and turn it into work items in seconds. Lines beginning with a project work-item type followed by a colon (e.g. User Story: …, Bug: …, or the US: shorthand) become work items. Pick the target Project, Area, Team and Sprint at the top — the area prefills from your project settings — then review the parsed list and, per item, set the parent (only open parents in the selected area are offered), assignee, tags, description with pasted or inserted images and videos (uploaded as attachments) and any other field the work-item type supports. Bulk-create them in one click; the returned work-item ids are clickable and open the item in a new tab.

Sprint Manager & Template Manager

Clone tagged sprint templates (stories and their tasks) into an active sprint with title-placeholder substitution, and manage reusable work-item templates. A work-item form action lets you create child items from matching team templates right from the work item's ⋯ menu.

Pipelines & Releases

A consolidated view of build and release activity for the project.

Dashboard Widgets

Add compact Check Summary, PR Monitor, Velocity and Roadmap tiles to any Azure DevOps dashboard.

Privacy & Security

  • Runs in the Azure DevOps sandboxed iframe as the signed-in user.
  • Requests only the scopes it needs: work items, code (read), build (read), release (read) and project (read).
  • Stores its configuration using the Azure DevOps Extension Data Service — your data stays in your organization.

Getting Started

Install the extension, open your project, and select DevOps InControl from the project hub navigation. Add your projects in Settings, pick the checks you want per project, and you're set. Settings save automatically.
