DevOpsLens: AI PR Summaries & Release Notes

Stop writing pull request descriptions and release notes by hand. DevOpsLens adds two tabs to Azure DevOps:

  • AI Summary on every pull request: what changed, why, and what could go wrong.
  • Release Notes on every pipeline run: commits and work items sorted into features, bug fixes and breaking changes.

A built-in Commit Validator flags commit messages that break your format or point to the wrong work item.

Features

AI Summary (pull request tab)

  • One-click summary in English or Arabic (العربية), with right-to-left layout.
  • High-level overview a project manager can read in ten seconds.
  • Changes grouped into New Features, Refactored Code, Risks and Breaking Changes, and Database/Config updates.
  • Risk checks: hard-coded secrets, destructive SQL, removed public APIs, empty catch blocks, leftover debug code.
  • Smart recommendations: missing work item link, missing unit tests, oversized pull requests.
  • Insert to Overview writes the summary into the pull request description. Running it again updates the same block.

Release Notes (pipeline run tab)

  • Pulls commits and work items attached to the build.
  • Sorts them into Features, Bug Fixes, Breaking Changes and Other.
  • Copy as Markdown or download a .md file.

Commit Validator

  • Checks the subject against a pattern you control (Conventional Commits by default).
  • Requires a work item reference (#123 or AB#123) and confirms it exists in Azure Boards.
  • Warns when a commit references a work item that is not linked to the pull request.

How the summary is produced

By default DevOpsLens analyzes changes with built-in rules inside your browser. No code leaves Azure DevOps. Optionally, you can connect your own OpenAI-compatible endpoint (including Azure OpenAI) in Settings to get written summaries from a language model.

Permissions

  • Code (read): read changed files and commits.
  • Code (write): only used when you select Insert to Overview.
  • Work items (read): read linked work items.
  • Build (read): read commits and work items of a pipeline run.

Get started

  1. Install the extension in your organization.
  2. Open any pull request and select the AI Summary tab.
  3. Select Generate AI Summary.
